The Daily Grind: What goes into making a great MMO zone?

When I look back at some of my favorite MMO zones, I can pick out some common threads that run through all of them. Many of these zones are lush and visually attractive, with plenty of vibrant foliage, a pleasing color scheme, and an eye candy skybox.

On top of that, a really great zone to me is one that encourages exploration, has interesting landmarks, and has a good mix of “familiar” and “alien” in its build. It should be something I haven’t seen a million times before, but if it happens to look like the world’s best summer camp, then I’ll be perfectly OK with the design. Oh! And it has to have great music, not be too frustrating to navigate, and not beat me down with an absurd difficulty level.

So in your opinion, what goes into making a great MMO zone? What elements come together and gel into an instant favorite?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
