The Daily Grind: What is the most impractical MMO mount ever devised?

There seems to be a bizarre competition going on between MMORPG developers to one-up each other’s games with progressively impractical mounts. I guess when you’ve seen one horse done a million times, your heart yearns for something, anything different.

But then we start getting things like roller beetles, giant bees, and racing snails, the limits of credulity become strained. I’ve spent way too much time as a grown man trying to figure out how, in these fictional universes, these creatures were flagged as tamable transport when there were so many better and tried-and-true options available. Even my incredible imagination can’t summon up an explanation.

In your opinion, what is the most impractical MMO mount ever devised? What about it is just ridiculous to you?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointedย questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Rift’s racing snails. The most ridiculous thing. Well, I think I saw sillier in TERA screenshots but I don’t play it so I can’t say for certain.

… there can’t be only one. (Yes, intentional Highlander reference.)

See, there are so many absolutely impractical mounts, that this is a question which cannot be answered. When you have multiple objects that score 100%, you cannot say one is the best fit.

I’m not even talking about things that bounce or jounce or vanish with water. I’m not talking about them somehow ending up in bags, running back and forth to some stable instantaneously no matter the distance, or having odd colors. No… I mean there are plenty that just don’t even compute. Before all those other issues come into play.

If we were to look at it in full terms, probably virtually every MMO mount would be impractical. There are, however, some things that are gameplay based. The rest is where I’m leaving the line of distinction.

What about it is just ridiculous to you?

Do I really have to explain?

In ESO the bear mount makes me feel sick because of all the bouncing and the nix-ox just looks awful.

I’ll stick to my horsie.

I personally don’t like mounts that let you feel motion sickness. Mounts with a lot of up and down and up and down are awful. I don’t care what the mount looks like or color patterns I just don’t want to feel nauseous while gaming.

What!? No mention of Neverwinter’s Gelatinous Cube???
Itโ€™s literally a cube of jelly (jello?) with you suspended in it like a bacteria in a petri-dish. But itโ€™s a cube. And itโ€™s green!

Literally my favorite mount!

Anything large enough to be parked over a mailbox or an NPC.

“Don’t worry, it’s a racing snail!”

All of GW2’s mounts because you have to grind them up to their full potential and you need different ones for zones. Most don’t mind this but i just found it stupid and annoying. All mmo’s should have one ground and one flying mount that’s it. And for water a sea horse. Mounts now have become another cash grab thing.
