Next month, Star Trek Online will boldly go where no Star Trek Online has gone before with the release of the first chapter of Age of Discovery. The “multi-part adventure” is based on the new CBS All Access TV series Star Trek: Discovery, and it will allow players “to create their own Discovery-era Federation Captain and embark on a mission with fellow Starfleet Academy Cadet, Sylvia Tilly (voiced by Mary Wiseman from Star Trek: Discovery).”

The first chapter of Age of Discovery “introduces a brand new Discovery tutorial, two episodes, added Reputation Tiers, a new Task Force Operation and other new gameplay features.” Age of Discovery’s first chapter will go live on PC on October 9th and will be coming to consoles “at a later date.” The press release also promises that after the first chapter’s release, “Star Trek Online will continue its exploration into the Star Trek: Discovery universe through a series of new updates, allowing players to discover even more characters, starships and iconic locations from the show.”

So sad what’s happened to Trek.

This long time Star Trek fan has enjoyed DSC a great deal and I’m looking forward to the Discovery content in STO! Yeah STO has a lot of bugs that probably will never be fixed, but as long as new, and in most cases, good content keeps coming, I’ll be happy to play it!

STO is about to learn exactly why all the merchandise manufacturers avoided STD like the plague.

I’m not happy with the dump that STD writers took all over established Trek lore; in much the same way that Disney disrespected Star Wars. As always, Hollywood does stuff like this because they can. Also, STD to me is mostly unlikable characters doing unlikable things.

Having said that, I will certainly be keeping an open mind with this expansion. New STO content is definitely a good thing, I kind of like the look of the Crossfield science ship, and it’s very possible that the STO writers may improve on STD. They can certainly do no worse.

I knew there’d be some Discovery hate here.

To me Star Trek Discovery is a great show with great characters. Saru (Doug Jones), Lt. Stamets and Tilly are all great characters. Captain Lorca is an amazing character.

There are some great Klingon characters as well, and their Klingon design is especially cool. They look like real intimidating aliens now too instead of dudes with goofy haircuts and rubber appliances stuck to their foreheads.

Sure, if it was more about exploration it would have been much better, but it’s about a (secret) war vessel in a time of war. It’s okay to have a Trek show about something different. Not every Captain needs to have inhuman levels of integrity.

Besides there’s another new Trek show coming now with Patrick Stewart soon that will probably be more for all of TNG people. So please, let us have our Discovery show without insults thrown at it!

If I was to be going into war, there is nobody I’d rather have on my side than Captain Lorca.

Lorca was easily one of the most compelling and interesting Trek characters I’ve ever seen.

To be fair I don’t really know what lore they messed with, and they probably (definitely) should have said they were in an alternate Universe, that way they could have done anything they wanted without upsetting prime lore. They also did do some things that upset me, but without seeing the future episodes it’s hard to know if those things will be set in stone (and I can’t say what I’m talking about or I’d be giving some major spoilers).

The effects are especially amazing.

Anyway I haven’t been on STO lately but will return for anything they do Discovery related.

You make some good points, your response is reasonably balanced, and to be fair I was probably coming down a bit hard on the show. That said, I typically don’t feel ‘hate’ towards a form of entertainment. I reserve that very strong word for situations like people brutalizing animals or holding a gun to my head.

STO actually explained the Kelvin Timeline better in a single episode than all 3 JJ movies combined, so there is hope.

Doesn’t excuse the Not-Klingons.

There is probably a whole lot of trth in that as with normal Trek Klingons he would have been noticed instantly.

Still as much as I loved Disvoery and its Aesthetic I would have preferred they left the way klingons looked alone. :)

Terminal Expanse I think it was? Really liked that story episode. In fact I very much enjoyed the whole Daniels ‘Yesterday’s War’ arc.

On a related note, the STO writers do sometimes knock the ball out of the park. Loved that one from early this year where you play as the Tzenkethi officer. They were definitely thinking outside the box with that one.

The official acronym for Discovery is “DSC.” Using a childish insult name for a show lot of people actually love lend your words any weight at all.

Hmmm……..Metacritic user score 4.7, Rotten Tomatoes audience score 56%. This must be some strange new meaning of the word ‘love’ that I had not previously heard. In any event I will never understand why people go to war with each other over differences of opinion on entertainment. The producers and cast of the show are not going to be your friend because you feel the need to defend them.

I’m not happy with the dump that STD writers took all over established Trek lore;

^^^
Trek fan here since 1969 (I was age 6). The above statement has been heard before:

1973:

I’m not happy with the dump that The Animated series writers took all over established Trek lore;

1979 – 1986

I’m not happy with the dump that the TOS feature film writers took all over established Trek lore;

1987:

I’m not happy with the dump that TNG writers took all over established Trek lore;

1993:

I’m not happy with the dump that DS9 writers took all over established Trek lore;

1995:

I’m not happy with the dump that ST: VOY writers took all over established Trek lore;

^^^
Although for me – the above statement is highly accurate as I stopped wathing ST: VOY after “The 37’s”. ;)

2001:

I’m not happy with the dump that ENT writers took all over established Trek lore;

2009 – 2016:

I’m not happy with the dump that JJ Abrams took all over established Trek lore;

So, yeah, if anything shows that ST: D is “Real Star Trek™“; it that’s it’s now been added to the list of statements above. Mt favorite series is the Original Star trek, but overall I so far have also enjoyed ST: D.

I’m looking forward to see what content the add to STO to make it a part of the game. I will say that I like the fact that STO now covers something from every incarnation of Star Trek to date. YMMV :)

I wonder if there are players who hate Voyager so much they won’t touch the Delta Rising content.

Yeah I have been a trek fan since a child. Since TNG till the discovery experiment, there were few complaints. Enterprise was hit/miss and that’s why it only lasted 4 seasons. But NEVER did I hear any Trek fans dump on TNG, DS9, Voyager, any of the video games, or movies. ::Mic Drop::

Except the Berman Star Trek shows stayed true to Roddenberry overall ideas STD in its first episode already broke the Roddenberry rule. Discovery won’t last past a 2nd season now that they actually need to spend money (Netflix payed for the first season).

They have already backpedaled on the Klingon look hinting that the augment virus again is the culprit blah blah (also that the bald look is mimicking what Khaless did before he fought Molar).

I guess you’re assuming I am a geriatric or something? Linking a news article from the 1980s? I was not a young man in the 1960s. My father was a young man in the 1960s. I stand by my point, IN MY LIFETIME I have never encountered fans of star trek dumping on the subsequent series until the discovery experiment was put forth.

Absolutely correct. I remember people around the time of Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s television debut absolutely livid over the new show and “how it wasn’t Star Trek“.

Only difference now is that the ubiquity of social media allows gauche people to insult anything others enjoy with impunity, and to think themselves clever while doing it.

Have they added exploration content yet?

Reader

NeoWolf

Nope, but they have significantly tidied up the story content.

There is a fairly significant amount of story content now too, which is nice.

There is an admiralty system which is a bit like a Fleets Duty system, which is sort of neat (though they detract from that by it mostly being beneficial only for those who OWN lots of ships intially).

lots of cameos and voicing from almost all era of Trek alums.

It has its negatives too still however, for instance.

They apparently upped the base difficulty, which im not overly happy about (afterall wasn’t that the point of difficulty settings choice in STO), but apparently us choosing how difficult we want it it is now secondary to how hard THEY want it.

Also like a gajillion types of lockbox now and lockbox spam is still ever present.

Alsoa bunch of OLD bugs still hanging around that havent been fixed for what is now literally MANy years.

Reader

Cool, thanks for the info on the lockboxes & spam. That was half the reason I never return for more than a week or so. (the other half is the sucktastic ground combat)

I think to be fair (and I don’t like being overly fair to Cryptic as they are still on my sh** list for OTHER reasons) that that issue is more down to the PWE overlords business model applied to the game than Cryptics actual game design.

As Pre PWE most things wnet into thr Store direct with only a very few going into lockboxes.
Now however pretty much the best of everything, ships, equipment, ground gear, kit modules, everything.. comes from a lockbox.

Fortunately pretty much everything EXCEPT the Tier 6 ships can be bought off the exchange for semi reasonable amounts fo credits, which are easy to gain.

Actually, you can have the store items in-game without spending money, if you’re willing to spend time grinding dilithium in-game instead.

A number of people in the large Fleet (guild) I belong to do this regularly. They grind dilitium in-game for X months, and then exchange it for Zen (store currency) on the in-game Dilithium Exchange (with the exchange rate set by player demand, not Cryptic), and they buy their “store starships” and other items that way.

Reader
Kickstarter Donor
NeoWolf

Exchange rate is pretty much in the pooper atm, it really isn’t worth the dilithium grind to conver t to zen atm :(

This also is a real significant grind method anyway for an individual as to buy say a ship 1000-15000 zen you are looking at needing between 267,000 – 4,005,000 dilithium at current rates.

Most people can earn between dil mining, duty missions, admiralty and event grind…maybe 20-40k ish per day on average if that is literally ALL they do on an average night and taking sensible breaks etc.

That is a significant time drop and boredom factor. So yeah it can be done..but you have to pity the poor soul that is only getting that level of enjoyment from a game lol

Enjoyment of entertainment should never be work only pleasure or why bother, right? :)

You can turn the lockbox spam off in the game on your PC.

Click the inverted triangle icon under your minimap and uncheck both the category choices having to do with announcements.

Reader

NeoWolf

That is “technically” true, but it has a caveat. The channel used for announcements of those thing is the same channel they use for official announcement and sevrer info like maintenance shutdowns etc.. so if you turn announcements off you also lose other important notices.

Not cooincidence they set it up that way i’m sure.

Also even if you turn it off it does not stay off by default (unlike other channels) and will automatically be swtiched back on the next time you log out.

On the plus side, once you get to T6 you can do a 300-mark task that reduces dil and mark (but not elite mark) requirements for Rep equipment by half for the entire account. Plus the Rep passives and active ability gets better, and they add another energy type for the weapons. Might be worth it after all.

Aye, of the many things I hope to see added to Star Trek Online one day, a new tier added to the Reputation grind was probably approaching last place on a very long list. I actually groaned when I first read the announcement.
