Dragon’s Dogma Online is shuttering in December

Probably more friendly than Dragon's Catma.

It’s entirely possible you don’t remember Dragon’s Dogma Online. The game it was based upon, Dragon’s Dogma, is a weirdly enduring little game that still enjoys lots of popular word-of-mouth to the extent that it’s kind of easy to forget that it’s not actually part of a series, just that one game and then its expansion. The online version, meanwhile, was always confined to only being available in Japan and is now shuttering for good in December after failing to find an adequate audience.

Those who did actually play the game despite the language barriers are unsurprisingly mourning the title’s demise, along with a few wondering why it was never localized and released elsewhere. As the game never had the dedicated community of some other never-technically-localized games, it seems that any sort of preservation efforts are unlikely to gain much traction, so there’s little left to do aside from offer condolences to those losing a beloved title.

Very sad to see that game get shut down especially since we never really got a chance to try it I would like to point out at the time of me posting this it does not say Dragon’s Dogma is shutting down it says Dragon’s Dogma is shuttering in December

Maybe if they had tapped the S.Korean, EU, and NA market maybe they would have made more money.

Financially, Capcom likely saw little reason to. Same thing as Phantasy Star Online 2 getting ye ole’ Infinite Delay. They’d have to either partner up with someone to run the servers–like they are doing in Japan, or invest in setting it up themselves. Neither of which they’d do. It’s why Monster Hunter, even Monster Hunter World, are run through Peer-to-Peer connections rather than hosted servers.

It’s also why Dragon’s Dogma Online is being canned. The contract for those running the DDO’s servers is rumored to end December, and without a strong enough base to make the cost worth it Capcom is pulling it.

If I had to guess? The game’s performance, while good all things said from what I can find, also wasn’t worth even porting about within the Asian market. PSO 2 got an, albeit shoddy, official English translation for the SEA region. And doing SEA-releases in English has been a common way many developers use to get around licensing and other costs to release outside of the region–something that, say, might require a little more work on their part for the Berserk and Attack On Titan crossovers to make it over here.
That they didn’t even bother to to create an SEA English client shows the game hasn’t been exactly the strongest operator even at launch or early in its life.

I got Dragon’s Dogma when it released for Switch, and it’s SO GOOD.

There’s some speculation that, between this shutting down and the game’s director having wrapped up on Devil May Cry 5, production is ramping up on Dragon’s Dogma 2. I really hope that’s the case, because I’d love to see a modern version of this game.

That’s ok, game wasn’t even remotely as good as the original DD (I’ve checked it couple years ago). And now there is a niche for actual Dragon’s Dogma MMO – or at least for multiplayer DD which could be as glorious as Monster Hunter since they use practically the same big monster combat scheme but DD is much better story/setting-wise.

You mean making a game that appeals to western audiences more Japan only wasn’t a good idea? I’m shocked.

While the client is no longer available to download off the site, there are still hosted options from members of the community on reddit that offer up a largely-updated version to play off of… And recommended, too, seeing as downloading on an internet service from the states off an VPN set in Japan isn’t exactly… quick…

Account creation should still be possible, since it seems to be a general account and not one tied to the game too. So people can still slip in!

… Provided you deal with the VPN and all that… And a Translation patch that covers most, but not everything.

Personally? Worth it… I’ve gone through Dragon’s Dogma and Dark Arisen several times, both on the original release and the Remastered current gen version. For the issues one might have with having to traverse the whole map? The combat is top-notch and the one thing it was always missing was cooperative play. Plus, there’s a class who punches and smacks gobs of molten metal onto enemies before Styling on them hard with a snap-explosion…

I love stuff like that. And I still need to unlock the last class, which is mage-sword guy. Which was sorely missing in the first game as is!

Did any one else read that as Dungeons and Dragons shutting down at first, sorry for the folks that play Dogma but I’m sure glad it isn’t DDO like I thought at first.
