The Daily Grind: What’s the most annoying type of MMO enemy to fight?

Oh, there's going to be so much chopping.

We all do it. We’re going along, adventuring in a virtual world, when we see an enemy approaching that makes us want to take an extended detour around it. It’s not that we couldn’t beat that mob, it’s just that we know it’ll take too long. Or be too annoying. Or require too many cooldowns. Or end up using a mechanic that drives us nuts.

So the answer is simply not to fight unless absolutely forced to.

I try not to avoid too many enemies in MMOs, but I’ll admit that I’m not crazy about ones that have extended times-to-kill or ones that run away at 20% or ones that fling weird crowd control spells on me. What about you? What’s the most annoying type of MMO enemy to fight — so you simply don’t?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Anything that springs out at me from behind — anything in Stranglethorn Vale in WoW, for example, or the tigers in Conan Exiles. Especially if they have a knock-down. Okay, add to the list anything with a knockdown effect, whichever way it’s attacking me. :D

Why you got to use a Wildstar pic as a header, man. Why you gotta hurt me like that?

Anything with an enrage timer or other “too long, you die now!” mechanics. Trio, duo and solo was the name of the game for me as my circle of MMO buddies splintered, and there often content we could enjoy but for this.

For me, “endgame” was to see how far we could push it with well-played, well-geared, meticulously specced characters.

Self-healing tanky creatures/regenerating health tanky mobs. Just takes so long, and then they heal up 50%. Auugh!

I hate anything that’s basically intended to ‘stop your actions’…like a stun(lock), sleep, ‘lift’ (Whirlwind in SWTOR), force choke (Those are really annoying unless you’re the one doing it!), blind/etc…especially because they give you a move to break them, but literally right after you use the move, the mobs use it again and you’re left stuck in it. It’s basically intended to waste your time/slow you down from progressing, and it’s really something that just needs to get removed from these games…

…the other one I really hated…was ‘champions’ with uber insane health bars/hit like a Mack truck, which are basically open map raid bosses that you don’t realize they are until you’ve been slapping at em for too long/or you just died from a couple hits.

The most annoying? The bugged mob or boss that resets randomly or becomes invulnerable.

The predictable raid boss. Oh, his attacks will follow this order 1, 2, 3, 4, repeat, and at 75 % health he pepper the are with AoE do that, at 50 % the adds will come and at 10 % he will rage. Yawn.

Those spider quests where they swarm and web you.

As others have said: cc. I want to add that if you have a counter it’s ok, but I hate when the mob often spams cc when your counter is on cooldown. That’s annoying. Also agree with the immunity bubbles and self-healing.
