Star Wars Squadrons promises further balance changes and cosmetics in 2021

What’s on the horizon for the multiplayer dogfighter Star Wars Squadrons? A whole lot of balancing and shiny new cosmetics to collect according to a recent post on the game’s website. The next few weeks will mostly be about balancing starfighters and components along with matchmaking tuning in order for players to have the best online matches possible. The work on balancing has already begun with a February 12th server-side update that made a couple of adjustments to the A-wing.

As for cosmetics, the last cosmetic drop will arrive on May 4th (thematics!), though cosmetic rewards will still continue to be added to Operations and special events. The post even offers an appeal to dataminers to not spoil the surprise, which means that the opposite is likely going to happen.

I wish I could have got into it but, like many, found way too many issues with it to really enjoy it. From gameplay to design and beyond. I say this as someone who bought X-Wing on CD-ROM back in the early 90s and it was far from my first flight sim on a computer so, yes, it’s a genre I like! Looking at the Steam charts, 650 average players this past month, with a 1500 peak. It’s just rubbish for people trying to play a multiplayer game. Especially when you have to factor in skill levels, and a world’s worth of timezones.

I would love to buy it personally, but its light single player content discourages me. As bad as i am in FPS games, I’m worse as a fighter pilot so the game would be useless unless it had a substantial single player campaign.

Yup, and it doesn’t. So throw that onto the (sizeable) pile of things wrong with the game and why, after SO MANY people bought a copy, they can barely scrape together a few hundred people playing it at times. Unlike the classic Star Wars flight games from the 90s, this isn’t going to be warmly remembered by 40 year olds in 25 year’s time.

The single player campaign is perfectly adequate and there are single player versions of the MP modes for practice. I’m finding it on sale a lot and $20 it’s good value and it is crossplay so there are more players than the steam numbers suggest.

I do wish you could replay some of the single player missions as a co-op multiplayer because the co-op Capital Ship battles are great fun and would love to expand on that. That and the creation of a custom scenario generator, like they had in x-wing Alliance.
