The Daily Grind: What’s the most embarrassing thing you ever said in MMO chat?

17

It’s one of my favorite things when someone else does it, but it’s so cringy when I do. It’s when you drop a big fat “MT” — or “mistell” — in your guild or world chat. Sometimes it can be a weird non sequitur, while sometimes it can be mortifying. Especially when you’re trying to romance that cute Elf in the tavern with your freshman-level poetry.

Our MMO guild seems to relish the opportunity to riff over mistells when they happen. The other night, a guildie accidentally sent us all “Now click on the book” with a follow up of “whoops, MT” — and we were off to the races. “You’re not my mother!” someone bellowed. “BUT I CAN’T READ!” said another. “Don’t read from it, that’ll open the gates of hell and end all life! Don’t you do it!” demanded our guild leader.

Anyway, we’ve all done it, so why not admit it? What’s the most embarrassing thing you ever (accidentally) said in MMO chat?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

GUILTY as charged. I’ve done that a bunch. Both in in-game chat channels, and in IM windows in other programs on the other monitor.

Anyone who says they’ve never done that is a liar. A filthy, stinking liar.

Mostly just mistyping to a custom channel when I meant to send a private tell. I can’t remember it ever being embarrassing. It’s usually just incomprehensible. I have *seen* a couple that were pretty bad though. Usually when someone is having a seriously steamy… private role play and sent *that* to a larger channel by mistake.

Many years ago in WoW (before I discovered my love for the single life), I had a long distance relationship and we would communicate in-game as it was cheaper than phone messages. Anyway one night I was trying to get into a high end raid and accidentally crossed the chats, after whispering ” I love you baby” to the raid leader I didn’t get a spot in the raid lol.

The question here is “What would you have done if you did get into the raid because of that MT?”

When I first started Playing EVE Online, I’d occasionally see “gf” in local chat. I thought I knew what it meant, but I eventually asked just to know for sure.

“It means good fight,” replied a helpful player.

“Oh,” I said. “I figured it meant go f***,” EVE being the way it is sometimes.

so the proper response ISN’T “gfys”?
