The Daily Grind: Which MMO has the worst general chat channel?

Oh dear.

Yes, yes, I know all of the jokes, World of Warcraft general chat is vile enough to be used as a biotoxin and all of that. Heck, I was there when the jokes were being written. The thing is that the jokes are also not entirely accurate. Sure, it could be bad, but I’ve seen some pretty terrible general chat in a lot of different MMOs thanks to, you know, playing a lot of different MMOs. And as bad as some parts of WoW could be, I don’t know if I’d necessarily call them the worst I’ve seen.

The reality is that having a chat channel with everyone included and no requirements for participation can leave to some loud people with low standards making the whole thing a toxic cesspit for everyone involved very quickly. But today, I’m curious to hear about your own horror stories and moments when you were tempted to just mute the chat so you’d never have to interact with these people ever again. Which MMO has the worst general chat channel?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Definitely BDO is up there and well the English channel in Albion is certainly interesting even though it’s heavily moderated.

There’s a worst? Pretty sure most of them are garbage lately, and it’s only up from there for a few of them.

I generally just don’t get into it with people on chats unless I see something that just really needs called out, and then I crush their whole argument out from under them or watch as the mob comes running to silence logic by inundating me with idiocy of dog-piling me trying to get me to shut up.

Funny thing is, I have more time than most of them do, so I usually end up clearing them out of there and they move on (To another area where they can get people to agree with them.) and the conversations become pleasant for a little period, as it’s like a breathe of fresh air has been had and people can chime in with their non-troll conversations for a bit. Usually ends up leading to about an hour or more of good conversation before another of those types shows up to shut down intellectual conversations and listen to their echo chamber of stupidity once again.

But I do less and less of it over the years because things are often not improving, and are steadily getting worse and worse online.

Most of humanity pretty much disgusts me at this point…

Can’t compare, since I mostly play one MMO…
Worst chat idea: SWTOR (1/4 of game you cannot chat at all as f2p). Then some 2 others where you have to buy (!) this.
Worst chat for me – LOTRO while US President election and Brexit went. All this “My candidate is good, yours is crap”, “Good for you, UK”, “You suck, UK”…Had to turn off /World.

BDO and TERA. At least BDO has a filter though.

I’ve found them all to be the same per-capita with regard to asshats and their behavior, so I’d have to go with WoW simply due to the volume of players.

On the other hand, I found WoW Classic stood out in my months of playing for having a higher ratio of helpful chat to people being ugly to each other (Mostly about politics at the time).

I understand many general chats were a battlefield during the US elections, but WoW Trade chat was a complete battlefield between advertisers trying to sell boosts and carries and hundreds of people trolling and having “debates”. It was the closest thing to Twitter I’ve seen and I enjoyed every second of it.

Hmm, it’s hard to come up with a “worst” for me, really. I’ve been playing MMOs since Ultima Online… Been through more than I can count.

Anyways, it’s really easier to name games that had more polite chat than the average MMO. In my experience, the gen chat in probably 7 out of 10 MMOs you could almost copy and paste from one into another and nobody would notice 😂.

Every game would have a time now and then when a flame war would break out, but at at least half had consistent, non-stop craziness like the cliche Barrens chat.

I can’t really say I ever saw much middle ground. The game either had waves of ridiculously crazy chat, or it was fairly polite and friendly, with an occasional heated political or ideological flame war.

FF14. Having no general chat is the worst by far.
