The Daily Grind: What’s your favorite single MMO expansion?

Oh look, it's whatever.

MMO expansions are a wonderful thing. No, seriously, I love expansions immensely. I love the feel of logging into a new expansion and hopefully finding amazing new landscapes, quests, challenges, experiences… you know, all of that fun stuff. It’s amazing. And I don’t think any long-running MMO with more than one expansion to its name doesn’t have a group of people adamantly and enthusiastically tracking the best expansion that a specific game has received, either. “Which expansion is the best expansion” is just, like… how we do things.

But today I don’t want you to figure out the best expansion for a specific game. No, I want to throw every expansion you’ve ever played into a supercollider cage match and find out your single favorite MMO expansion. Whether or not it’s the single best expansion of all time isn’t important; what matters is whether it’s your favorite. So what’s your personal absolute favorite individual MMO expansion, and why does that one stick in your memory so deeply?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I’ve played many expansions this last 20 years, from some gold like A Jump to Lighspeed to some complete and useless garbage like Shadowlands, and i have full confidence to say theres nothing in the market like Shadowbringers, from the perfect story, the the masterpiece level art, the mind blowing soundtrack and the best dungeons i’ve ever seen, Shadowbringers is the most perfect expansion ever made in every conceivable aspect except pvp, witch isn’t a strong or that much relevant thing in the game!

I’d vote for Shadows of Luclin in original EQ, because it was a massive graphics upgrade the likes of which you almost never get in an MMO.

EVERYTHING was suddenly twice the resolution, it was mind-blowing for its time.

YES! i LOVED that expansion. Most fun I ever had in STO, and made me realize what I really wanted was a TOS-setting game. The film grain effect was awesome too.

The Shadow Odyssey for Everquest 2. It was when the game was at its best, before it got bloated and weird. The diversity of dungeons and raids was amazing, and there was so much to do.

It changes, as none of them were as good as memory serves. Right now I’d say Kunark in old EQ, since that was when I first stepped out of the MU* realm and into the visceral world of three dimensions.

I’d been a MU player for the better part of a decade already, so I had no problems with the crowd or the mechanics, but that visceral translation of presence into an open world 3D environment was the first thing that awed me about MMOs.

Kunark was a real heroes journey for me as a player, in a time before rails and cutscenes where everyone had to make decisions as to how they would be known to others on the server. I made friends. I saved people hundreds of hours of frustration and inconvenience, and it all seemed to matter.

Jump to Lightspeed in Star Wars Galaxies. Always running around the planet and looking up to the sky wondering why this is Star Wars and cant go into space and then one day like magic up in space with multi person spaceships. Fing EPIC!!! Always hold a sweet spot in my heart…

The Burning Crusade. Man, the feeling I had coming through the Dark Portal… Current shenanigans aside, it was the happiest I’ve ever been jumping into an expansion.

What’s my favorite single mmo expansion? The same one that’s my least favorite. Lord of the Rings Online Mines of Moria. I loved soo much of it but the really cool legendary items mechanics system turned out to be a total drudge. So there ya go.

EverQuest – Ruins of Kunark. It set the bar for what an expansion should be in the MMORPG space, adding new races, new classes, more levels, more zones, more more more… and yet it fit in with the base game as a whole. It expanded the world without wrecking the old content.

I have been known to argue that it is the only “all good” expansion in the genre.
