The Daily Grind: Which NPC do you personally hate the most in your favorite MMOs?

A nasty boy, a foul cigarette boy.

A while back, Bree and I were sharing memories of the original launch of Guild Wars and talking about the exact moment when we both decided that Prince Rurik could happily die. I think we settled on him whining about trifling with doors. It’s not really a big deal, of course, but it definitely undercut what was supposed to be an emotional impact when I felt more happy than anything to see Rurik’s “heroic sacrifice” result in his demise. Good riddance; see you in a little while to capture a skill from your corpse.

Then again, he’s hardly the only NPC in games that I’ve had a particular dislike for. Often I can’t even explain what it is about specific characters; it’s not like Corso Riggs does anything particularly objectionable for most of his screen time in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but I still want to throw that idiot down a well. So which NPC do you personally hate the most in your favorite MMOs? Do you have a reason for it, or do you just shrug and accept that you wish to hurl them down a well for no clearly identifiable reason?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Stuga. And Sun-in-Shadow.

That’s a long list. Top two would be Nathan Ironforge in Qeynos in Everquest 2. Have you even SEEEEEEN a gnoll before? And then Trehearne in GW2 for being an annoying tree-Jesus.

Then basically every NPC in FF14 during ARR quests.

For me in FFXIV there are 2 that just annoy me the first is the Bad Twin you know who you are so I don’t want to struggle with trying to spell your name. And then I just fine Lyse annoying and would be just fine not seeing here again.

Alphinaud, and at least he gets a lot better

Spoiler
(after fucking up by forming a corrupt paramilitary organization that proceeds to commit warcrimes).

Lyse’s problems I accredit to them just not writing her very well. Like she has an idea of what to do, an NPC tells her no, then the same NPC or another does the exact same thing Lyse suggested. JUST LET LYSE DO THINGS!

Nathanos & Garrosh from WoW.
And Genn vs. Sylvanus is just tiresome (and almost comedic – /screams at sky, “SYLVANUS!!!!”) at this point.

I can’t stand Braham in GW2.

Not a fan of Theron Shan in SWTOR.

Thancred is my least favorite of the main cast in FFXIV (hated him in ARR), but after Shadowbringers I’ve upgraded him from disliked to tolerated.

Everyone in the Dark Brotherhood in ESO.
Where I came to love and adore every character in the Thieves Guild, I came to loathe everyone in the Brotherhood.

I only have the singleplayer games for comparison – but isn’t the point of the Brotherhood that most of them are complete nutball serial killers who drown kittens and skin live orphans as a hobby? I mean, the one time I tried to unlock it in Skyrim I ended up rolling back to an earlier save when it became pretty obvious that “this is the in-game faction for players who just want to kill everyone.”

Braham in GW2. Just so…many…issues.

Having Thancred in the image for this post is amusing. He’s one I’m not a fan of, but he bounces around for me since ARR. Never really in my ‘push into a compactor’ level, but he has gotten close.

I honestly mostly ignore NPCs in MMOs, with only a few like in FF14 and SWTOR really making me care that much about them. Skadge would be number one to push out the airlock as even acquiring him makes zero sense, my BHs should have just popped a rail gun round into his ugly mug and moved on,but you get stuck with him from garbage plot/writing and he’s one of the few NPCs in SWTOR that I never even tried to work with and unlock their background and story.

I never did that storyline, but I seem to remember Skadge was liked by basically no one. Even Khem Val has some fans – he’s actually a little more complex than you might expect. Among other things, he kind of breaks with Bioware’s obsession with their “Lawful Doormat” and “Homicidal Chaotic Douchebag” alignments. He’s perfectly fine with you making many Lightside choices, as long as you’re showing strength doing it, and especially if you’re potentially provoking other Sith into attacking you. ‘Cause then he gets to eat them.

But Skadge is apparently just completely unlikable. Not helped by his character design, which seems genuinely designed to be completely repulsive. (If so… mission succeeded!)

I’m not a big Khem Val fan either, but he is indeed more complex than Skadge, who is quite literally just a thug, and how you meet Khem makes more sense too, so I can tolerate him being around.

Unless they’re heavily cyborged. Not enough meat on them.

See, I’ve never understood the hate that a lot of folks online have for Corso Riggs. He’s an honest, masculine, ex-military, farm boy.

How can you hate that?

He’s a terrible wingman when you’re flirting with NPCs. Like, total wet blanket. Now Bowdaar…he knows how to help a brother out. Totally had my back when I had the chance to improve the genetics of Alderaan royalty.

Another vote for Prince Rurik, the original Leroy Jenkins.

Cyril from RIFT is one of the most generic faction leaders I’ve ever seen. Asha bothers me in several ways, but Cyril gained resentment from even seeing him in Sanctum.
