Almost tangible. Again.

Today we’re kicking off our traditional countdown of MassivelyOP’s weirdest MMORPG stories of the year!

Coming in at #2 on our list is…

The Final Fantasy XIV ERP billboard

The Final Fantasy XIV community erupted over a billboard this past summer, and not just any billboard: Players actually paid for billboards in the real world (in Texas) to advertise an ERP nightclub event in the game. Where it ran afoul of really everything was the part where the advertisers swiped Square-Enix’s logos and flouted the use of very-much-against-the-terms-of-service modded outfits and poses in the artwork, which all but begged the studio to crack down on players in-game and out.

Fortunately, the players pulled the billboards after just two days and only $160 paid, and nobody was banned or sued… but it sure did create a weird fuss and amplify FFXIV’s strange reputation.

Stay tuned for another weird story tomorrow, and don’t forget to check out our annual MMORPG awards and our Golden Yachties!
