The Daily Grind: Do you make or borrow your MMO class builds?

Let’s talk about MMO character builds! This question works for almost every MMORPG, whether it has classes or skills or traits or anything in between. Most MMOs have some sort of character build customization system along the way, even if it’s mostly nominal or fluffy, but I’m betting that for the majority of players, those builds have a big impact on gameplay – and on their success. Which means that unless the game is faceroll-easy, you need to become an expert on builds if you’re going to put something together from scratch.

Of course, most gamers don’t have the time or desire to become min-maxing build experts, so they make use of builds created by those number-crunching weirdos who were born with a calculator in one hand and a spreadsheet in the other, and bless those weirdos because they help the rest of the MMO-playing population suck a lil bit less.

Me, I think I’m in the middle: I like to take other folks’ expert builds and then tinker with them to optimize them for my personal tastes. No sense reinventing the whole wheel, right?

In general, do you make or borrow your MMO class builds? Or is it somewhere in the middle?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
