The Daily Grind: How do you manage your alts in MMOs where you have several?

When Bjork sang “Army of Me,” she was not talking about having large arsenal of MMO characters. This was for several reasons, not the least of which being that the song was released in 1995, predating Ultima Online and thereby meaning the concept did not exist at the time. But it’s currently 2023, and it’s entirely possible for you to have a dozen characters or more in some titles – which raises the question of how in the world you’re going to keep track of all these people.

Some games offer you tools for seeing what is sitting in the inventory of another character or benefits for leveling other characters. Others make it outright difficult to even mail things between your characters. Whatever the case, how do you manage your alts in MMOs where you have several? Is it just through memory? Spreadsheets? Not managing them at all and kind of hoping everything works out across multiple characters?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
