Coming in at #3 on our list is…
The year NASCAR failed at esports
This story is more like four stories that all make up a weird narrative arc that has absolute zero chance of making it onto any of our formal lists. But it still stuck out to me as I went back through the year. How in the world did we do so many stories about racecars? COVID, probably, but still. To wit:
- Formula 1 has replaced all its canceled Grand Prix races with races inside Codemaster’s F1 video game
- NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace ragequits during an official esports racing event
- NASCAR driver botches yet another online iRacing esports event
- Formula E driver gets caught cheating in an esports race after using a surrogate driver
Let’s just say that racecar people had a unique moment to try to cross over into esports and did not appoint itself well.
