The Daily Grind: Should MMO servers use linked or independent auction halls?

Uh... this doesn't look like an auction...

I’m of two minds on this one.

I really like server-linked auction halls! I like when there’s just one shared economy for everyone, so you know you’re not getting screwed because you landed on the biggest server (or the smallest server), and you can always see the best price. It’s got to be easier to balance and monitor for the devs too.

But I also really hate server-linked auction halls! There’s no way to engage in creative market arbitrage, there’s always a race to the bottom for most salables, and if there are multiple servers, the faucets are still usually so different that smaller servers wind up paying big-server prices anyway.

I mean, I am a player-vendor fan all the way, but I also like auction halls, and I’ve seldom seen one that does every single thing right. What do you think – should MMO servers use linked or independent auction halls? Which MMO has a particularly fair one?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
