Survival sandbox Aloft explains how its all-new momentum system will work

“Out with the old and in with the new,” declares survival sandbox Aloft, as studio Astrolabe’s latest dev blog takes a look at the new momentum system, which will be replacing the game’s original stamina system in an effort to make the game reward risky actions in combat and movement and make almost every action feel more dynamic.

Momentum is effectively a build and spend resource, which regenerates when performing actions like gliding close to the surface of an island or hitting an updraft, successfully blocking or striking enemies in various ways, and when the character is hydrated or enthusiastic about clearing island gloom. As for how to spend momentum, that can be done primarily in combat in order to perform special maneuvers or heal up mid-fight.

In the future, the momentum system will enfold itself into other activities including recharging after repairing a sky ship’s sails, gliding alongside birds, or drinking some coffee (relatable). This new system will be in play once Aloft makes its planned launch sometime this fall, though the post does note it is subject to change as things are polished and features are added.
