Every so often, I find myself playing a video game that has, up to that point, been a whole lot of fun, only to realize that the game is over now just as it was starting to ramp up. The most recent example was Timespinner, which I definitely enjoyed as a game, but I fully cleared it within about two and a half days. That’s pretty quick for a Metroidvania-style title, and it really stands out because the total number of traversal-based challenges you have to hit are around… three things, maybe four? It’s pretty light on the backtracking, in other words.
Of course, MMO patches are the same way. Sometimes you settle down for the Big New Update and you can’t wait to try it out, only to realize that you can see everything in the patch in a couple of hours and then it’s just about waiting for the next one. And no, I don’t mean “the patch has a couple hours of content but it’ll be weeks of grinding”; I mean that you have finished the lion’s share of the content within that time. So what’s an MMO patch you were looking forward to that you finished almost immediately?
