One of the new survival sandboxes that Massively OP’s MJ has been eager to try is Valnir Rok. And thanks a free day in honor of the newest Dungeons and Dragon update, she can! Anyone who wants to get a taste of the Norse life can download and play the game on Steam for free until tomorrow, December 21st, at 1:00 p.m. EST. Join us live at 9:00 p.m. as OPTV‘s infamous Stream Team brings you a first look at…

Remember Warspear Online? It’s a 2-D fantasy MMO out of Russia from 2008, when it debuted on mobile devices. (This should make you feel super old.) The devs say that in bringing the game to Steam this week, they hope to “expand [their] audience by attracting desktop gamers who are lacking nostalgic MMORPGs.”
Valnir Rok is also new to Steam this fall. This week it dropped a good-sized patch, updating the “Viking-inspired online roleplaying adventure” game with a new PvP arena, an ability system, an NPC employment system, new experience mechanics, character idles, and a bunch of bug fixes.
Finally, there’s Broke Protocol, the cops-and-robbers voxelbox that’s a mash-up of GTAO and Minecraft, and it trickled out to Steam quietly a few months back, to mostly positive reviews (though no updates since). We’ve tucked trailers down below if there’s anything that strikes your fancy!
It is time to tap into brutality, savagery, and primal struggles. No, we’re not talking about football season but rather the early access launch of Viking MMO Valnir Rok.
The cutthroat survival game transitioned from closed alpha testing to early access on Tuesday, opening the doors for players to visit Valnir Island and see if they can hack it as a Norseman of yore. You can get a slight 10% discount if you pick up the game between now and October 3rd, otherwise you’re going to have to mortgage your house to pay the full $20 for the in-development game.
The team has been busy talking up Valnir Rok on the official site, with developer blogs covering the game’s writing, new servers, and the official wallpaper. Additionally, you can watch the early access launch trailer after the jump!
It’s time for another survivalbox roundup! What’s new in the world of eternal building, unbuilding, ganking, ganking buildings, and consuming adequate food and water so you don’t keel over dead from all the fun you’re having?
Viking-themed survival sandbox Valnir Rok is currently conducting closed alpha rounds, having opened up new servers in Asia, South America, and Russia for this weekend’s test event.
“Looking back, it was a good decision to make another closed alpha weekend before the launch,” wrote the devs this week. “Although the player’s feedback was very positive overall, we found several bugs and some serious problems. We managed to fix some issues over the weekend and patched a few performance problems. Now our task is to fix severe bugs, which influence gameplay, to have a successfull launch. Nevertheless, we are looking forward going in Early Access by the end of September.”
What else have we got here…
If you like the refined mead flavor of Vikings and Norse mythology, then you’re the ideal audience for Valnir Rok. This survival sandbox is a meld of both cultures, putting players in the boots of a stranded Viking on a mysterious island.
As per other games of this type, Valnir Rok turns you loose to see what you can make of yourself. “As a hardened Viking warrior, butcher your enemies in bloody combat, build and improve village structures, and form a clan to expand your power and reputation,” the studio explained. “Battle against opposing clans, place bounties on hated enemies, and discover ruin artifacts to gain favor with the gods with great deeds and holy sacrifices.”
Valnir Rok has been in development for a while but will be making its big public debut at Gamescom later this month. You can sign up to be a part of the closed alpha and give the game’s announcement trailer a watch below.
