Star Wars: The Old Republic announces Mandalore's Revenge, coming June 3rd

BioWare has just announced Mandalore's Revenge, the next chapter in Star Wars: The Old Republic's Knights of the Fallen Empire storyline. More than that, the studio has confirmed just who the Mandalore is, something we suspected but didn't know for sure.

"The newest chapter in the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion gives the Outlander an opportunity to confront Emperor Arcann with an army of ruthless Mandalorian warriors. Enlist the help of the infamous bounty hunter [SPOILER] as you and your Alliance move to seize control of the most powerful armada in the galaxy – the Eternal Fleet. Prepare to brave the harsh desert world of Darvannis and survive its brutal enemy forces in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy from the Eternal Empire forever – and earn the loyalties of [SPOILER] and unyielding Mandalorian warriors!"

So who's the Mandalore? Click here to reveal the name we've censored above.
Shae Vizla.

As usual with these chapters, subbers gain access to chapter 1 through chapter 13, while freebie players who've not subbed for the storyline at all will be able to jump into a trial of chapter one and potentially snag a level 60 character boost upon activating. Those subbed by June 1st will also find their accounts granted an Eternal Empire Patroller vehicle. "Subscribe by June 1 to receive Early Access to Chapter 14: Mandalore’s Revenge on June 1 and Chapter 15 coming later this [summer]," BioWare suggests. [Update: BioWare has since clarified to MOP that both chapter 14 and 15 will release in June.]

Watch the teaser trailer below -- just note, it's also got spoilers!

Can't say I'm super excited about This new Mandalore. She's pretty boring, honestly. I would have preferred either of the Mandalorian companions, who were both pretty boring in their own right.

This game is dead to me for now, i used to love it and played it a lot. spent a lot of money in it too and dont mind, it was a good ride.

But i have every character max on every side and every profession. I've seen every story and now the end-game is a bunch of weak story content. i mean really? Its like they forgot this is an MMO and not some game where you get to join once a month to play a story mission by yourself. what are they thinking?

I love the world they built, i much rather they invested into making it a more interesting place to explore. I wish there was some server where everything was really hard to kill no matter where you went so it would be scaled to max level and you max level characters could fight hard long battles to get interesting loot. But i am dreaming of course.

 Heh, Indeed.

Last time I checked, the journalistic standard when using short forms is to spell out the full name of something the first time  you use it in a written piece, and then to default to short forms after establishing the subject for the readers.

I actually do try to do this here (when I remember) for the sake of readers who don't know all the short forms -- but I'm not a journalist, and this is commentary, not reportage.

-- and calling people "looser fucking nerds" is to win support? Hostility is not a motivator, and all that. :-)

Cheers,

My BH is gonna love this! And Shae Visla is one of my favorite characters in the game. I hope we get to know the story of how she became the Mandalore.. and maybe even some interaction with the Mandalorians as a group if you play as a BH.

I've like the story so far. They're doing the GoT thing of delaying things needlessly, but such is life in the serialized media age.

Also lol @ the people below acting like their Foucault for liking ESO over the plebeian SWTOR.

I just jumped back into this as a friend has been playing, sadly in preparation I jumped on my Sith Juggernaut and got him from 55-58 only to find that the reason me and my friend could not find each other was because he was a Jedi :)

So have had to start a new toon, so far it's pretty fun, I like the stat changes so you just have mastery now, opens up a lot of BoE gear I was "saving" for when I made a toon it would work on but now any can use.

@theeknighthood You can go from 1 - 65 in a few days. I made a new Rep Commando yesterday and I have him at level 40 now plus have his profession Armstech at level 403 all without going to the second planet. Flashpoints are your friend :P

Woo hoo!  Two chapters in one month.  Probably really short, but I'm game.

Honestly all in all KOFTE has been the absolute weakest expansion so far. The previous ones? Played them multiple times. This one?Stopped midway trough with my second toon. Only subpar story and nothing else really.

It's not some new thing to hate on Bioware. We've been doing it for years and years now. The real Bioware died long ago. It's more machine than man now. The good writers are gone. The doctors have retired. All that's left is the name.

Bannex19
Bannex19

This expansion's story is way better than the horrible a new hope 1.5 Hollywood just put out.

I'm not a fanboy of starwars in the least but I must say for an mmo it does have pretty compelling stories. Not great but better than average and def better than most of the alternatives.

mourasaint

I haven't played a greatly written Bioware game since Dragon Age: Origins

Coffee, Please
Coffee, Please

@mourasaint

That was actually super cliche, straight down to the villain and betrayal. Even the villain's appearance was as cliche as possible. It was horrible from start to finish. Within the first 5 to 10 minutes you knew literally everything that was going to happen and who was going to do it and why.

I've seen better written children's cartoons. There was literally nothing good about Dragon Age.. and then the second one happened.. an entire game cooked from left over copypasta.  (╥_╥)

Bannex19
Bannex19

As far as voice acting goes alone TSW is better.

mourasaint
mourasaint

Actually, behind it's seemingly generic facade, Dragon Age: Origin's story was deceptively deep and layered. It obviously riffed off of notions of Jungian archetypes and myth structures, including THE DRAGON as the devouring mother figure.

The Fade as the realm of the unconscious, and its demonic denizens as anthropomorphized psychological maladies.

Paladins as crack-addicted religious enforcers, Elves as societal outcasts...

There is no shortage of twists to the basic high fantasy template in DA:O.

@menofhorror

I love how the fanboys say that Bioware's at their strongest when it comes to story and yet this expansion's story has been mediocre at best. I doubt even a single-player KOTOR 3 would be any better. Bioware has never been the same since EA bought them out.

Karl_Hungus
Karl_Hungus

@mourasaint

I found Dragon Age to be nothing innovative or original, just another mediocre retelling of the same high fantasy tropes. Inquisition was okay just because of the sheer volume of content compared to previous installations in the franchise, but the story itself was nothing to write home about. But we're talking about something completely subjective here. Not everyone has the same tastes. Some people seem to really love KOTFE's story. I don't hate it, but I certainly don't get the love for it. Maybe I was spoiled by the Bioware of old.

Bannex19
Bannex19

Don't worry dude, it's currently cool to hate bioware for some reason but fact is they still write a great story and most of these people saying they don't will be in line for Andromeda.

Bannex19
Bannex19

I'm a big fan of eso but I will say as far as a star wars story is concerned bioware writes them well.

SW stories are full of cheese, cliches and drama. The swtor writers captured that perfectly, whether it was intentional or not. I'm not sure what you're expecting in terms of mmo writing, eso isn't much better. Neither are cringe worthy but come on its not easy to make a Sci fi story without holes.

mourasaint
mourasaint

@Bannex19 I won't, that's for sure.

The original Mass Effect was a marked step down from BioWare's previous games (both in terms of story and gameplay), but at least it had an interesting set up and memorable twist.

Same can't be said for its utterly generic sequel, nor the one that followed.

BioWare's storytelling is presently a shade below Telltale, which is already mediocre in itself.

Karl_Hungus
Karl_Hungus

@Bannex19

I think ESO is destroying SWTOR in the story department right now, even with the lack of dialogue options. People seem to think SWTOR's story is good just because there's a dialogue wheel and it's all animated but the writing itself is rather mediocre. It wasn't so bad in Shadow of Revan because there was a ton of other stuff to do, but with KOTFE the focus is entirely on the story so the gaping flaws stick out like a sore thumb. Bioware is putting out an hour of story each month while Zenimax is putting out 20+ hours of story every three months, along with new dungeons and raids. There is something for everyone in ESO's DLC. SWTOR is only offering a mediocre story that is too short-lived with little replayability. Bioware has made it really hard for me to give them money.

menofhorror
menofhorror

@Coffee, Please @mourasaint Cliche doesn`t equal bad Coffee. Something cliche can be really good if executed right.

Also this "it`s really cool to hate on Bioware" is just a lazy way to not bother arguing. But I guess there are still enough people that literally defend anything Bioware does.

Bannex19
Bannex19

I'm not defending bioware or swtor in the sense that I actually like this game. I stopped playing swtor awhile ago and tbh I'm not a huge star wars fan in general anymore. I'm just trying to make the point that as far as writing a star wars level story I don't think bioware does a terrible job because in reality the star wars stories are little better than professional wrestling.

It's a space soap opera and it always has been until Abrams decided to make it Rey Bourne.

Bannex19
Bannex19

I'll be straight up honest, I loved Mass Effect. All of them.

I also enjoyed Dragon Age Origins and Inquisition.

Bannex19
Bannex19

Who is arguing here? I'm clarifying my opinion. Lambasting bioware for there writing without offering any legitimate example of better writing in a video game is lazy.

I'll offer some tho: Pillars of eternity, The Witcher Series, TSW, Red Dead, GTA5, Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2, Fallout 4 is ok but kind of hamfisted, I personally think ffxiv story sucks, Assassins Creed Black Flag was a great story as well as 1,2 and 3.

Honestly, I guess I don't expect Bernard Cornwell level writing from video games but I will say the vast majority of story driven games beat the fuck out of Captain America: Civil War in terms of story.

Capedavenger
Capedavenger

@Karl_Hungus @Bannex19 Arguing about story and narrative in RPGs, whatever form, is a brutally subjective exercise in futility.  One man's Hugo is another man's pulp trash.

Doesn't mean it isn't fun to argue about it...

Damonvile
Damonvile

@Capedavenger @Karl_Hungus @Bannex19 It's all terrible writing if we're going to actually compare it to anything award winning outside games. This has a lot more in common with what fast food burger is best than who actually has "great" writing.

"...Fallout 4"

I think BioWare has become a shadow of itself in nearly every respect, including writing, but lets be serious: even the worst-written BioWare game is still two or three shades better than anything Bethesda's churned out.

I agree with the rest of your list though, as regards to video games (not sure where the hatred for Civil War came from, as it's hardly masterfully written but well in line, and even slightly better, than the majority of its genre homologues).

menofhorror
menofhorror

@Karl_Hungus @Bannex19 I agree. And here is another secret: I never played KOTOR. I am right now judging KOFTE in comparison to the stories before and the answer is that KOFTE is the weakest story so far. It`s really Bioware Austin`s story, not mine. It feels generic and not interesting. Arcann and Vailyn are honestly very uninteresting in comparison to many villains we had in class stories.

You would think they would put all their budget into the story now but it seems their budget is that minimal where they can only afford a lot linear corridors, lots of auto dialouge and generic story development. They fucked up companions as well to me. They aren`t unique anymore. They are a checklist. Each one gets one special scene in a chapter and then they are done.

The alliance companions you gain and then do absolutely nothing with them, no new conversations, nothing. And like Karl_Hungus mentioned: the worst part is the lack of replayability since it`s only a single story.

Until they get a decent budget (and not just for pretty trailers and cartell market) I will never subscribe again. As much as I would love to see the game succeed, I can`t support this trainwreck anymore.

I really need to train out ESO.

Bannex19

The avengers are torn apart because some lady who lost her son while they saved the world 4 separate times? Idk it was all very flimsy. Nobody stood up and said "hey if it wasn't for us each one of those times everybody in the world is dead or enslaved."

Nope they just glossed over it in typical Hollywood fashion hoping nobody sees their major plot holes. The dialogue was fine but the story was terrible. At least beneath deadpool's dick and fart jokes they actually tried to tackle the fight against cancer and how it causes everything from relationship stress to body dysmorphia. Civil war was a BLM statement which is fine if it wasn't done so painfully trite.

I guess I've found more concise thought processes and completed loose ends in games vs movies. Game stories, for the most part, are targeted at smarter audiences I think.

EpicViking
EpicViking

@menofhorror Not gonna lie, i only do KOTFE on my main so far.. seems pretty tedious doing all these chapters on all my characters.. ill probably start doing em slowly over time though, but for now i only really play my Bounty Hunter at all, and for once there is story parts more fitting for a non-force user. :D

Daex
Daex

@Karl_Hungus @menofhorror It's not even about the story itself, it's lack of it that's the most painful. Original class stories were something special, but now there is not even differentiation between Imp/Rep. They basically forced every character in the game into Jedi Knight storyline.

Samhain92
Samhain92

@Coffee, Please @Karl_Hungus @menofhorror Age doesn't affect a story negatively. For example, Frankenstein, Dracula, Alice in Wonderland. Where as now the most recent best sellers are...Twilight...A terrible fanfiction of twilight, I mean 50 shades of grey, and the only decent one of the bunch Harry Potter. So I really don't see your point about a story being decades years old. A better story is a better story, period.

mourasaint
mourasaint

As far as writing and story goes, TSW wipes the floor with both of them.

Coffee, Please
Coffee, Please

@Samhain92 @Coffee, Please @Karl_Hungus @menofhorror

I wasn't trying to suggest that age has a negative effect on a story at all. I'm still a fan of those games myself. However, the people who wrote those stories, the BioWare of that day, is not the BioWare of today.

You see some of that talent in Mass Effect, but that's pretty much it and who knows where that's going to go after ME3.

That looks exciting!  I think I'll still wait until the end to start up again.  Or maybe until just before it, because I'm sure once it comes out the interwebs will be as spoiler-y as hell and I do like to read about SWTOR..

Capedavenger
Capedavenger

@jeremy2020 FFXIV has a charming, if unoriginal storyline.  Sometimes polish and execution make up for a lack of originality.  My GF and I are really enjoying our progress through Eorzea.

We felt exactly the same way working through multiple storylines in SWTOR.  For all its faults, SWTOR is still , by far, the best MMO to "dual" in the history of the genre.

Gamers will argue about the merits (or lack thereof) in Star Wars: The Old Republic years after the game is no more -- it's what certain gamers (and certain Star Wars fans) do.

Me? I enjoy the game for what it is, and I will give them this -- I never expected the Fallen Empire chapters to arrive so regularly, or so relatively quickly, and I do appreciate that.

Having the chapters arrive pretty much every month, regularly, helps to keep the story fresh in my mind, and towards the front of my gamer thoughts.

Qarran
Qarran

@mysecretid  It is a great idea and gave the player base a good deal of what they have been asking for and continue to ask for.  KoTFE has been great for SWTOR.

If they now take a similar approach to Endgame Ops with new content and regular refinements, given what hey have done with PvP so far this year, the game will be in great shape going into year 6.

Amazing considering where this game was 5 years ago.

Capedavenger
Capedavenger

@Qarran @mysecretid Honestly, I don't think they have the resources to be that ambitious anymore.  I think design decisions are so handcuffed by their fragile business solvency that we should be happy with the fact that there is new content at all, and that EA continues to support the game.

The state of the Old Republic lore in the EU of Star Wars is really tantalizing.  There is so much good material that has been written in comics, novels and games, you wonder if Disney is going to mine this material for future projects.

menofhorror
menofhorror

@Qarran @mysecretid Would be cool but I am pretty sure that we will never see Ops again in this game. And since the warzone happened recently it`s going to take at least another 2 years until they put out another.
