ARK: Survival Evolved rolls out bees, sharks with frickin laser beams, and an auction house mod

Why I took this post, I have no idea: I’m firmly in the “NOT THE BEES” camp over here, and yet bees are exactly what ARK: Survival Evolved got this weekend in the form of Giant Bees. That, and sharks with frickin laser beams on their heads thanks to the TEK Megalodon Saddle. Not coincidentally, we suspect, the volcano POI has also gotten a major redesign and is actually active.

Reddit is currently debating whether Studio Wildcard’s implication that it’s going to hold off on new creatures following the late May patch is a good idea. Just kidding, everybody thinks it’s a good idea. As one poster put it, “Now they will finally be doing what many of us have been saying for years: ‘STOP ADDING SHIT AND FIX YER SHIT!'”

Meanwhile, there’s good stuff rolling out for custom servers thanks to Wildcard’s sponsored mods program, including an auction house!

I really love this game. I’m Jane Goodall, roaming about a prehistoric world, watching the animals interact.
Last night I watched in fascination and horror as a large bipedal carnivorous bird (probably gastornis or diatryma) attacked and bloodied a hulking stegosaurus. Battle was joined, with the stego swinging its spiky tail around, the bird chewing on its haunch, and the stego getting extremely bloodied from the ferocious attack. I got too close and the stego’s tail swiped me, nearly killing me, I backed off with a hair of health left, and saw the stegosaurus eventually kill the gastornis. It then stood and posed over its fallen foe and I got a really good super-res picture of it standing there dripping with blood using Nvidia ANSEL. I will post a link to it later (super-res pictures are massive, and the detail is phenomenal).

If you ever wanted to explore Jurassic Park, this is the game for you.

At least it’s not aquatic and big enough that someone else could install the laser.

Is this still unplayable (framerate-wise)?

Really depends on your computer.

I’m on a 6700k 4.2 GHz with 16 GB of DDR4 and a 1080Ti and run the game fine in 4k.

Ram fixes that, even my R750x2 sysyem can run it well with 8g of ram … Bit that was a while back and I imagine it has gotten better with that due to the console ports.

So wrong. The game looks amazing. You must be playing it with shite IntelHD graphics.

Or else you just havent seen any other Unreal 4 engine games that actually have devs that know what they are doing yet.

Ark looks like garbage visually compared to something like Gears of War 4. Its the difference between a trained and skilled professional, and an amateur.

GoW looks like trash compared to Assassin’s Creed Syndicate or Witcher 3. A game doesn’t have to be “the best” to be good.

I seem to recall saying “Unreal 4 engine” which Witcher 3 and AC syndicate dont use.

Witcher 3 is amazing looking.

AC Syndicate, while i love the theme, style and setting, is actually hugely technically inferior to what GoW has done using the Unreal Engine. AC has always been notorious for pop-in, syndicate not being an exception here.

Nice deflection though…

Back to Ark… the devs have failed to even scratch the surface of what the unreal 4 engine can handle, and what they have done, is like an 8 year old kid from New York who is trying to eat rice with chop sticks for the first time.
