The Daily Grind: When was the last time you binged on an MMO, and what was it?

Over the weekend, thanks to a perfect combination of nothing pressing on my calendar for a change, an injured ankle, and crappy weather, I stayed home and basically binged on MMOs. It started out innocently; I hopped into Trove to play with my son, then I talked myself into farming to buy him a club (it’s a like a custom private island) to play around in, and within a few hours, I had devised a list of a hundred other things in the game I wanted to do and the whole family was hanging out in the living room together playing an MMO. Finally, that whole kid thing is paying off!

It’s the closest I’ve come to binging on an MMO in quite a while; usually, real life interrupts me and ruins my streak. When was the last time you binged an MMO, and what was it?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

BDO, and right now actually … I got back into the game to kill some time and lightly scratch the MMO itch that built up while waiting for Bless.

What was supposed to be a quickie with an old flam that had let me down in the past has turned into quite the affair as I am now back in a guild (just a member, well founding officer: but I get to recruit & start guild quests & kick people, while not having to deal with members drama) with my tamer up at 55 now & the Kunoichi I rolled a day and a half ago just dinged 50 last night.

The fact that I figured out how to find all of the game’s plot quests and side quests (I thought they had been stripped from the game, but no: just hidden to make it real easy to walk right past most of them) and getting back into trading made me really question if I should bother waiting for bless at all.

Then I go watch videos like this and go “maybe I won’t go investing in BDO’s cash shop just yet.”

Not for a long time for me. The last time would be in Earth & Beyond or Anarchy Online when i binged mmo playing. Even when i played Wow it would be for a couple of hours at most. I never liked raids in mmo’s either. Seems like these days i watch my play time more than i used too.

I think the last game I binged an MMO was EQ2 when it released. Mostly because my partner and I were trying to get ahead of the rat race. Since then, I’ve learned it’s better to let everyone else go first at releases, then I can glide through at my own pace, soaking up lore, collecting and exploring. I think that’s when I truly learned my gaming style and broke off from playing with people that were rushing content.

ArcheAge and Black Dessert online, when they were new… but only for a short time. After playing both those games, I’ve no interest in Korean games anymore. They are flat out the worst money grab games I’ve ever played. Will not play any games that are similar in their profit structure. It’s a shame because they had, at their core, fun and interesting ideas that were just ruined by the heavy pay walls.

Dark Age of Camelot was the last true game I’ve often binged played and was addicted to for a long period of time (haven’t played it in years though). I long for another such game and tentatively hope that Camelot Unchained will fill that void (but am still uncertain about there being essentially no PvE, not sure it will be the game I am looking for).

Nostalrius the WoW private server. I leveled a character to level 60 there, it took a good bit of time. It was the first time in many years I was actually committed to one MMO for any length of time.

Work keeps me from engaging in proper binges. So I’d probably have to say it’s been 10 years since I was entirely consumed by an MMO — and that was LOTRO. When I was still a grad student, I definitely played 4+ hours a day from about 2007-2009. Nowadays, I’m lucky to get 2 hours of free time in total in a day, so binges are off the table unless my family is away and I’m alone in the house.

All that said, I’ve come close to binging on Warframe in the months since I started playing it. This weekend I played it for about 4 hours straight in one session and didn’t even notice the time passing. That game can really get its claws into you!

Been binging Secret World Legends hard core since launch, 9 months and counting, won’t be ending anytime soon with new content on the way.

Before that was only EQ2 i binged this hard, along with SWG. Sure been enamoured with many mmo’s in between but it really came down to what’s the difference?

They all became easy wow mode cookie cutters, even EQ2. Before anyone feels butt hurt there wasn’t anything really wrong with it, they just gave the masses what they wanted; easy mode; push the button to win, but they weren’t really binge worthy too me, after a month or so; meh, same old same old.

Depends on what you consider a binge.

Does it require the large amount of gaming time to be uninterrupted/uninterruptable? then the last time I was able to do that was in WoW, during the WotLK expansion.

Does it merely requires a large amount of gaming time in a single day? Then I’ve done that with just about every MMO I’ve played. Games are my main entertainment venue, and though I can’t guarantee more than 30 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay, whenever I have the day off I can spend many such 30 minutes segments playing games.

WoW and ESO are the only ones I’ve really been hooked on.
