SWTOR devs walk you through the selling points of Update 5.8

Ready for Star Wars: The Old Republic Patch 5.8’s arrival next week? It’s OK if not, because the developers are here to bring you up to speed on the latest chapter of this MMO’s journey.

The team popped on a livestream yesterday to cover a half-dozen features that are coming with the update, including the return of two companions (the Inquisitor’s Ashara and the Imperial Agent’s Vector), some screens of the improved conquest user interface, an embedded trailer for Izax, and the lore behind the Gods of the Machine operation.

BioWare said that it is slating class balance tweaks for 5.9, not 5.8, so you’ll have to wait a little while to see what these utility changes will bring.

I’ve always loved the thought process of class balancing at the end of Ranked PvP seasons – makes perfect timing sense, right?

The first pull on PTS lasted 8 seconds and no one has beaten it yet… might just have to hang around the forums to see the inevitable crying this is going to cause.

As seen discussed elsewhere, the idea of making this boss a: ‘PuG killer’ and trying to appeal to hard core raiders in a game that’s given them nothing or at least almost nothing for years is a very odd decision. I can’t imagine the game has any dedicated raiders left after they’ve been ignored for so long. People are still raiding, I raided once last year when a friend asked me to bring my jug tank to one, but it’s hardly been the game’s focus.

None of this is exactly thrilling though. And why the weird icons like Valkorian for Ashara and whatever that is for Vector? Is it bad editing?

There is a relatively sound logic behind it in that making highly difficult raiding content means that it will last longer; which helps when you’re working with limited resources and can’t make as much as you probably need. However, the other side of the coin is that raid content consumes far more time and resources: had they spent the resources it took to make this raid on smaller, more widely accessible content, they probably could have rolled out three or four flashpoints and two or three daily areas in the last year, instead of one each. Making more smaller content might have kept a larger player base; but there’s no guarantee of that either, so they seem to be rolling the dice keeping a certain type of player for as long as possible.

The choices of the last year are really just a continuation of this studio’s habit of over-committing to a course of development. Things like starfigher, strongholds, and the whole Knights of X are examples of BioWare Austin taking relatively simple player desires (off-rails space flight; customization inside one’s ship; more 1.X era storytelling), and going to an absolute extreme with them that nobody wanted. For whatever reason, this studio seems incapable of maintaining a well rounded MMORPG, and is only capable of focusing only on one thing at a time.

Agreed. If your a hard core raider your either not playing a game that takes years between raids and then takes a year to put out 5 bosses or raiding just isn’t as important to you as you may think. While any coming back will have to gear up and then likely be waiting another 3 years for the next full raid and the way the servers are going it wont last 3 years.

What was sad is how little was said in 30 minutes. Are they aware the awful state of the game? Are they aware of how little content has been added, do they even realize that its been 6 months between even the smallest story update. While over a year between any story update that isn’t a couple of meaningless cut scenes tagged round a flashpoint. Who are they even aiming the game at any more, its not the story fans, its not the casuals or pug players, is it now just Keiths playground? He wants challenging raids to run his 12 Command rank 300 toons through so that is what they are going to deliver, everyone else be damned.

I notice they didn’t even mention the Arcann romance, hopefully they have realized how pathetic it must be. A guy that has committed crimes against humanity will in the space of one conversation have the player and the npc falling deeply in love? Talk of fast but also completely farcical that it will all happen in one conversation. So hopefully they have seen how ludicrous it is and taken it out.

Nightmare difficulty on Izax is for a limited time. He’ll be retuned to HM difficulty in the follow-on patch.
