Final Stand Ragnarok re-emerges with a new champion, progression overhaul, and new game mode

So. Final Stand: Ragnarok. You all remember that game? It’s the side project of Camelot Unchained studio Unchained Development that went into its third early access release this past March and is still in early access to this day even as it put out a 1.0 update.

Well, the game is back in the headlines once again thanks to the 1.2 update that arrived earlier this week, which has introduced another lineup of features, headlined by the new champion Carthalon the Gladiator, a melee damage dealer and healer who swings two blades through enemies to build up fervor, which can then be spent to heal allies and buff himself.

Another major addition in the patch is a revamp of progression thanks to a new progression tree that lets players assign perks to customize their favorite character and watch them grow in power. There are a limited number of perk points that can be spent, but respecs are free.

Finally, update 1.2 brings a new missions game mode described in the latest game newsletter as “a more compact, repeatable, and challenging experience” for smaller parties to take on.

Finding a party may continue to prove difficult, however: SteamDB once again shows that the game hasn’t picked up traction with players, which seems to have been true since the 1.1 update in June; the game has seen just a few peaks in the last couple of months at 10-35 players. Recent reviews on Steam continue to be unkind as well: As one player reviewer put it, “This game is too early for early access. The developers need to pull this and be patient.”

MMORPG veterans will know that Camelot Unchained, which was originally Kickstarted in 2013, has taken flak over the years thanks to delays, the founding of a second studio, the announcement of a second game using CU’s custom-built engine, delayed refunds, and lack of accountability. The game entered its “beta one” phase back in 2018, with tests capable of putting 3000 humans and bots on the battlefield simultaneously. In 2024, following more investment into studio Unchained Games (fka City State Entertainment), the team launched Final Stand Ragnarok into early access again and is targeting Camelot Unchained by the end of 2025.
