The Daily Grind: Would you play a stripped-down mobile version of your favorite MMO?

The (as of yet unspecified) plans to create a mobile version of Final Fantasy XI touches on a sore subject for me: the lack of quality MMOs in the mobile market. Perhaps they’re too complex to boil down to a touch screen, but I’m hoping that if FFXI can create a decent mobile adaptation, then other studios will perhaps follow in its path.

But I would even settle for a lesser version of my favorite MMOs to play while I’m fiddling around with a tablet or my phone. I envision a game where you can still help your characters out by doing some combat, exploration, and resource collecting during your off-hours, leaving the high adventure stuff for when you get back to your PC or console.

Thus, I’m wondering if you would play a stripped-down mobile version of your favorite MMO? Would that be useful, fun, or pointless?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Stripped down wouldn’t interest me.  As others have said I would like to manage inventory, sell, buy, move characters, tradeskill.  Being able to somehow “level” a skill or a charm or gear while on mobile would be nice, maybe earn tokens redeemable for in game purchases would be interesting. Just not full gameplay, it would be too gimped with current technology.

Ment to say no need for scaling

Mobile sims was basically a facebookifacation of a popular game turning it into a cash shop pod

I’ve said for awhile Anarchy online would port well to mobile / tab without any scalding at all. Can already play on a win 8 tab as it is

In general, no. I don’t find tablets or smartphones viable for gaming. Yes, you can link a keyboard/mouse/controller up to them and that makes it a little better but that removes the mobility and very few people will actually do that. Thus, these games are designed to work with touchscreens and end up with limited and/or frustrating UIs and controls, even when you do add the accessories in.

HOWEVER, and this makes me sound like a hypocrite [but whatever], I am completely onboard with the FFXI port. Why? It was my first and still favorite MMO. I’ll probably never go back and play it on PC at this point but I certainly would try it on mobile. It might be terrible and I’d still probably like it just because of the favoritism. That said, I don’t fault anyone for saying that they would like to see this for whatever reason. I can’t say I think the game would be good but I do think mobile devices are perfect for MMO experiences, it’s just the controls that are the problem. If someone can do it right, I say fine.

I always thought that City of Heroes could have spun off the brilliant Costume Creator and the Market into mobile apps. Not the full game but the ability to create a character on your phone or tablet.

Also doing your market transactions could have been done – buying and selling and crafting.

I guess that could also have been extended into the Incarnate crafting system and possibly respecs/character builds.

Any other games that offer similar kind of facilities could probably do that kind of thing – I’m surprised it hasn’t happened – it would give players a reason to engage with the game when unable to play it – keep up with friends, chatter and events and do what they need when they’ve got five minutes – rather than when they are able to actually play.

Probably not something everyone would use but a useful feature.

No way. Tablet version, maybe. MAYBE. Hypothetical future but still portable platform? Sure, possibly. Depends on what it’d be. But not mobile, ew.

Probably not.  I tried the mobile version thing with Sims, and the mobile Sims is pretty awful.  I’d need a lot of reports the mobile of whatever other game wasn’t that way before I’d pay for another flop there.  A mobile extension, like Rift’s scratch off games or WoW’s armory, those I’d use.
