Star Citizen’s April report contains some interesting persistent universe nuggets

Star Citizen fans, I hope you have a cup of coffee or some other caffeinated beverage, because it’s time for the space sim sandbox’s April monthly report. As per usual, Cloud Imperium studios from around the world have checked in to report on their progress over the past 30 days, and it makes for an interesting, if lengthy, read.

CIG Austin’s persistent universe design team teases their work on the upcoming social module. “Where does a player start when he/she logs in? What do they experience as they participate in various activities around a landing zone? What happens when they interact with REDACTED??? All very important questions that ultimately helped shape the design for shopping, storage, NPC setup, and more. We’ll continue to break these down even further as we progress into next month,” the team explains.

There are also a couple of interesting blurbs about Star Citizen’s occupations, including the Pioneer, the Mercenary/Escort, and the Bounty Hunter.

Rustybladez When you say 2 – 3 weeks, has that been confirmed in yesterday’s 10 For the FPS producer?  I haven’t see it yet.  I also believe we’re getting a write-up this week on the situation concerning the FPS module.

You have to ask someone else about upstream procedures in CIG. All I know is that they use different development branches. But I don’t believe the project managing factor is going to make or brake this game.

Vikingr Akami Do they ever talk about how often and efficiently they merge and integrate branches back into the mainline?

Is it every milestone? Do other teams get locked out of the mainline when a merge happens? What about when core tech changes and bigger refactors are required to successfully integrate, does that slow down other teams. What worse is how the timezone factor plays into this, where you are likely to lose a business day or 2 alone just based of work hours across the world.

Working in multiple branches is really challenging even when you are in the exact same development studio. Now you’re talking about adding in trans national companies into the mix and the coordination and planning alone for it gets exponentially harder.

Darkwalker75 Akami In game dev, its not uncommon to have outsourced aspects of your game being worked on, and coordinated with across a couple of different teams.

However, the scope and level of how this project is being split across various teams is probably an Industry first. Not entirely unprecedented, but super progressive nonetheless. These guys are already responsible for many industry firsts, particularly with the way they raised the money for it, so they are looking to mix things up.

If you were asking me personally what I think about it? I’d tell you it sounds like an absolute nightmare from an integration, and project management standpoint. If they pull it off, they could write a new book on team silo’s and coordination and build a business off that alone.

I would call this month’s report more of the glue report – there is a lot of seemingly un-interesting bits about internal code and small details but all of this is the glue that will bind each part and feature consistently together.  There is a lot of code within the client already that won’t be used until FPS or Social or 2.0 drops, but it is there and waiting for the next module to drop.

FPS should be 2-3 weeks, Social should be a month after, and 2.0 ??? not sure.  2.0 feels more of an art integration party than anything.

Translation:
I hate everything SC and have to go around and troll every article about SC because I’m obsessed with it and got nothing better to do.

I don’t know if you noticed or if they removed it before you saw it, but he dropped a couple posts in the previous article about the cargo system.

Never seen anyone so obsessed with something before, and I mean it literally.
Seen plenty of obsession and idiocy on the net, but this guy is so beyond anything I don’t think there ware words to describe it.
