The Daily Grind: Are there any survival sandbox features you’d like to see in MMORPGs?

107

I’ve been playing a lot of ARK: Survival Evolved lately. It’s certainly not an MMO, just judging by player count, but it has elements of progression, persistence, crafting, and combat that many MMOs share. My question to you this morning, MassivelyOP readers, is whether or not there’s any aspect or feature in particular from ARK or its survival sandbox brethren that you’d like to see incorporated into an honest-to-goodness MMORPG.

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Animals/predators that wander around on randomized paths, herds of animals that roam a region, depending on season or weather.
No red marks above aggro mob’s head. Observe or find other ways to decide wether a mob is dangerous or not.
Food chain behaviour: Herbivores eat herbs, predators eat herbivores (and players), players collect/hunt herbs, herbivores and predators for different material.
Crafting where players really need (brain) skill to make good items with high stats. (intelligent/puzzle/riddle mini game)

Season and weather that influence animal behaviour (more predators at night, different mobs in winter) and collectible material: Different herbs/fruits in autumn e.g.

Flamethekid Robert80  Yeah, I like some of what they are doing (other parts not so much.)  They did put a lot of thought into the game, and I love a lot of the systems overall… but it just doesn’t fit me personally.  *Thanks for mentioning it though, because that system is definitely cool!!*

Population growth and extinction.

I’d like to see the possibility of player characters their respective race becoming on the verge of extinction if enough player characters or their race dies.

When a player dies, they replace a npc human or whatever. But if every human is dead, then the players can’t respawn and they become extinct.

Then the whole world is unplayable and then you gotta reroll another server.

Either that or play as another species.

Right on. I’ve played Epoch, DayZ, and Reign of Kings servers that all had better communities, role play, immersion and entertainment value than any triple a mmo I’ve played in a really long time. All that’s missing is the Massive part for me.

Robert80 their was this one mmo that is like that still in development called peria chronicles crafting is an actual thing you do like is a realistic sense that if you want to make a table you have to put all the wooden pieces together or if you want to make a automated house you actually have to put all the pieces in place and the wiring

rottenrotny I could agree with everything apart from maybe the sleep / eat / hydrate. If sleeping, eating and drinking are in an MMO, I prefer them to be optional to gain some kind of buff. Like sleeping in your house in ArcheAge. I don’t want my chars to die of thirst or to be like zombies due to lack of sleep… that’s too much realism imo.

Y’know, my guild has been MMO hunting since the closure of Tabula Rasa back in ’09.  We started playing a mod for Arma 3 called “Epoch.”  It has revitalized my entire guild.
We have our own private dedicated server and guess what?  We have crafting, vehicles, housing, and a completely persistent gaming world that is larger than almost every single MMO world.  With a few mods installed we have multiple mission systems, traders, and a huge AI faction to fight complete with choppers and tanks.
Our Arma 3 Epoch server is a better flippin’ MMO than any traditional MMO I have ever played.
