ARK floats to the top of Steam’s summer sales

Have you been intrigued by the dino-centric ARK: Survival Evolved? If so, you’re not alone: The survival game was a monster hit during the Steam Monster Summer Sale. Although Valve doesn’t release sales data, Steamspy collected and compiled data to determine that during the event ARK came in fourth place for number of sales (nearly half a million) and second place in total revenue (earning over $10 million). Players who missed out on the deals when the summer sale ended on June 21st can still buy into the early access for $29.99.

Massively OP’s own Jef Reahard is currently hosting a server for our community.

bigja MJ Guthrie BalsBigBrother NP!  Like I said, your comment got me curious, then I started wondering about how much different titles are covered and so I just started counting. The numbers were kind of surprising even to me for different games. =D

MJ Guthrie bigja BalsBigBrother Hi MJ, thanks for taking the time to respond.  I appreciate you listing out the number of times covered and I think you’re right about being programmed to notice things like this more.

I’ve been reading and enjoying Massively(OP) for years and love what you guys are doing.  I think I was just being grumpy when I posted the initial comment but please don’t take it as a negative, you guys are awesome.

bigja Kody Gloval If there was any type of paid promotion, it would be fully and obviously disclosed.  But since there isn’t, there is nothing to disclose. ARK just happens to be making news and some staff are really enjoying playing it. That’s all.

bigja BalsBigBrotherI can understand the feeling that something you aren’t the most interested in reading about pops up too frequently (we all prefer more coverage on the games we like best!) because we seem programmed to notice and remember the negative more. But I can assure you that ARK hasn’t taken over the news, nor does writing about it  take away from writing about anything else anymore than writing about WoW or any other game does.  But your comment got me curious, so I wanted to see just how much it has been covered.
Since we began covering the game 2 months ago there are only 13 items, which includes news posts, streams, a daily grind, mention in a podcast, and a betawatch entry (which contains tons of other games as well). To see if it is over-represented, I compared the 13 to some other games, just since May 12th to be fair.
Crowfall: 26
WoW: 76
Shroud of the Avatar: 13
WildStar: 36
Neverwinter: 17
RIFT: 15
EVE: 40
Second Life: 1
GW2: 56

In this random sampling I have a variety of game types and popularity levels. ARK definitely has not been the major topic here; it has been dwarfed by many other titles. It is new, however, therefore it produces more news relatively speaking. Additionally, people
are also interested in new and want to read and talk about it.

It would be so cool if the game were a bit more of a time-jumper, where lower levels happened in the Triassic, mid levels in the Jurassic, and high level content in the Cretacious.

The dinos would get bigger, meaner, and weirder along that timeline.    Plus you’d see the introduction of fur and feathers among the fauna.

bigja BalsBigBrother They’ve already made clear that they cover ‘orbiting’ types of games (MMO-ish, similar concepts, etc).

bigja Kody Gloval I dont know, I interact with more people on an small ARK server than I do on a full pop WoW server.
