Crowdfunded indie MMO TheWorld in ‘limbo’ as lead dev goes MIA

A Massively OP reader has tipped us off to trouble brewing over in TheWorld, an ultra-indie MMORPG we’ve never before covered. Staff and moderators working on the game have raised the alarm that the lead developer — and the man holding the keys to the website, latest code, servers, and $20,000 in player donations — has seemingly been MIA since early November.

“I’m pretty sure I know where Sieg is at the moment, and why he suddenly vanished,” wrote TheWorld dev Aryth. “For his privacy, I won’t divulge where, but he will definitely be back. Whether or not he will want to continue the project after this episode is another question entirely. So, even though he pops in and out, this project is still in limbo. Please do not get unnecessarily hopeful in his return until he himself posts something or we post something on his behalf. Thanks!”

World Director Keramory told players that the staff would try to salvage the game and that they were confident the game’s funds had been been swindled. “In short we’re scrambling to figure out what we can do from here. People have been in the dark because we too, have been in the dark for most of this.”

Donations for the game have apparently also been suspended. The website’s last big update was in September of last year and included this video.

The lead dev has now resurfaced with this note, telling people that he’s been in basic training:

Hello everyone, I’d like to let you know that I am not dead, nor have I left the project behind. For reasons I’ll explain in a later announcement I haven’t been around, or had reliable access to a computer for a while. Fortunately I have access now, and I’m in the process of getting all my stuff set back up so that I can get back to work on the game. I am going over the backlog of messages and posts I’ve gotten since I’ve been gone, now. So don’t be too surprised if you get a reply to an old pm. Some small points I’d like to make: I quickly suspended the donations because I was going to be unable to offer support, manage the servers, accounts, or add anything to the game while I was gone. Donations will likely return to normal once I have all my equipment set back up. This is also the reason I delayed switching to Patreon.

With thanks to Max and our anon tipsters.

BobDobalina The 20k was not to make the MMO. The 20k was only to buy the resources required to get the game from pre-alpha to beta. This isn’t some AAA title that has to pay for 10-100 or even 1000s of employees. The amount is reasonable for its intended use.

JesLyck There is no authority knocking on his door because there is no evidence that a crime was committed. Lack of evidence is not evidence. The author of this article did not explain the issue well, so it makes sense why you would come to the conclusion that a crime was committed, but that’s not what happened.
You said “pre-investigate” yourself, so take your own advice if you want to know the whole story and not just the side that the author wrote up.

“…and that they were confident the game’s funds had been been swindled.”
Would you mind explaining where this came from? At no point in time did any of the staff state they were confident the funds had been swindled. It’d be nice if you didn’t spread a lie like that as being in the dark and being confident that something specific happened are not even remotely the same thing.
If your job is to write stories, then write stories. Don’t make a story and explode the issue just to get more views though. That’s sleazy, and you know it.

Theo454 Rheem Octuris schlag sweetleaf One time, a while ago, I randomly went up to my wife, with my pants stretched open, and sang, “Where in my pants is Rheem Octuris’s P****?” (Not my real name)

She laughed for like 5 minutes straight.
