Players vote to change Elite Dangerous: Engineers progression

12

Are Elite Dangerous players happy with how Engineers’ endgame progression is in the beta or do they want a change? According to a poll put out by Frontier, the community voted overwhelmingly that the studio should change progression to be “mission-based” instead of the current crafting-based format.

In the poll, 88% of players preferred the change to “doing missions with a matching theme,” while 12% were fine with the system as it was. Elite Dangerous has been working on patching up and polishing its Engineers beta before pushing it to live, so this could represent a significant change for the expansion.

In other voting news, Elite players selected five battlegroups that will be competing in the next stage of the Dangerous Games.

It might not have been an official poll but you could see the complaints on the live stream when they announced how the progression was going to be influence based and then the loot crafting route.

There was a lot of talk in the Kickstarter of what they called ‘2nd Tier NPCs’ who you would gain influence with by running missions for them (Kind of like a mini mission set / Campaign). As soon as the Engineer’s were announced people made the assumptions that this was these 2nd Tier NPCs which your would run missions for. Frontier didn’t say otherwise until the 2nd week of Beta and so there was a lot of grumbling about it.

Personally, I would have liked a kind of half way house where you gain influence until you’ve reached a certain level and then you get a mission to access the next tier (Kind of like military Missions). However the devs have said it’s ‘too expensive’ to do and so we’re going to be stuck with the present system.

Although I do like the randomness of the crafted items (mostly to stop Min-Max – ing). I do feel that the chance of a weapon gaining a special effect should be a lot higher than what they’re setting it at.

Kayweg Yeah, there’s a poll everyday in the official forums. Somebody’s always mad about something.

Isn’t it the point of polls to give time for people to respond?
Two weeks sounds about right.
Would not have been any point of checking out the poll on day one.

Sorry, MOP, but you don’t have a story here.
As Cotic already pointed out, this is not an official Frontier poll.
Even more, nobody from Frontier ever posted in that thread (which now is almost 2 weeks old and all the way back on page 18 of the 2.1 beta sub-forum) either.
Missed the mark by a mile with thisone, fellas.

Well what I’ve learned from such votes is that the vocal minority is about the only group that responds to those with a smattering with people who actually mean well.  After the vote the vocal minority congratulate the company for listening to the fan base.  Once the feature is implemented the vocal minority – sometimes the exact same group that wanted the feature – rag on the company about how terrible the feature is.  If the company applies reality to the feature in any way then folks who had no interest in the feature but are rights activist will also chime in about how the company didn’t listen.

The best recourse is just do it since there will always be whining over whatever it is.  Sometimes founded (like an easily exploitable mechanic), but usually not the tear storm will ensue.

Lheiah exactly!
I like the current system more then some “streamlined”, read easier, version. Vocal
forum minority is proposing something else because the current version
will take too long, and i for one do not care about instant
gratification type of systems.

435 voters….that tells me >95% of the active players are satisfied with the game enough not to go the game’s forums and complain. Prime example of scewing numbers to look like something it’s not. C’mon Massively, seriously?

I somehow doubt they are going to make this change regardless how many players want it (Doesn’t matter to me rather it is crafting or mission focused).

The reason I doubt it is because it is a major change to the system and something that would push back its release for amount of time.

Frontier have already said there will be other ways to progress with Engineers besides crafting. The use of bounty vouchers, exploration data and so on will see your status improve with them, they also said that there simply wasn’t enough time to design and implement custom missions purely for the engineers although it was something they would like to do.

Normally, I’d agree with this position. But it seems to me that, if you’re ever going to do “crafting-based progression”, then an update about Engineers is the place to do it.
