As a long-term veteran of The Secret World, I am no stranger to the concept of “brutal masochistic difficulty” in MMORPGs. At times, I have both passionately loved and hated this game simultaneously, cursing the devs for the high difficulty while feeling exhilarated when I master hard parts. But I would be lying if I didn’t say that there were times in this game when I wanted to rage quit and go back to fluffy, mindless MMO instead.
Everyone has different thresholds when it comes to MMO difficulty. Some of us will patiently research and learn intricate systems while others will reject a game if systems can’t be picked up intuitively and quickly. Some of us welcome a challenge and don’t mind it when the game wipes the floor with us until we manage to squeak out a victory, while others among us would rather not hit brick walls with their faces over and over again until they fall down.
What’s your MMO difficulty threshold? Have you found a game that’s hit that “sweet spot” when it comes to being hard — but not too hard for you?
