Just before the final round of the MechWarrior Online 2016 World Championship last night, Piranha Games president Russ Bullock dropped a bombshell, announcing that the studio is also developing MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. And he did this without even saying a word at first, just loading into the game and playing it in front of an extremely excited audience.
Bullock noted that Mercenaries will be the first stand-alone MechWarrior game for the PC since 2002. Unlike the multiplayer MWO, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will be a dedicated singleplayer PvE game with a career-based Mercenary campaign. That would certainly scratch some of the itch any MWO players have for playing verses AI. The game is being built on the Unreal engine and has a planned to release of 2018. Bullock assures that there won’t be any slowdown on the development of MWO due to the new project.
If you weren’t at MechCon live and also missed the announcement on Twitch, you can still watch some alpha gameplay footage right here. Then keep an eye on mw5mercs.com as the game develops.
