The Daily Grind: Have you ever used MMOs to live out fantasies from other IPs?

One of my absolute favorite parts of City of Heroes was seeing the crazy mish-mash of intellectual properties that players brought to the game. Thanks to the robust character creator, players had the tools to recreate many of their favorite heroes (and villains) from fiction and non-fiction. Nobody seemed to mind much that Marvel’s Hulk was duking it out with Street Fighter II’s Guile because that was just how it went. We had permission to live out any fantasy we liked (more or less).

It’s not an uncommon thing for players to bring in a completely separate IP into an MMO that they’re playing. Getting to play the role of a beloved character, even if it’s not fully supported by the game, is a thrill for some players. I’ll admit to doing it once in a while myself, whipping up characters who derive inspiration from my favorite games, TV shows, and books.

Have you done this? Have you ever used MMOs to live out fantasies from completely separate IPs? Confess now or let it forever weigh on your soul!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
