FOnline: Reloaded brings classic Fallout gameplay to the online space

Do you have a hankering for classic Fallout gameplay, but with a whole lot of your friends hanging around at the same time? The good news is that you can get that, after a fashion. FOnline: Reloaded proudly touts itself as offering the same classic gameplay and locations from Fallout and Fallout 2. It’s a fan project that focuses on PvP conflicts, and it should look familiar to anyone who enjoyed clicking away on the old isometric titles back when they were still new.

It’s also a game that may look very familiar to Bethesda’s lawyers when it comes to intellectual property rights, but it’s a good thing that Bethesda doesn’t make any money off of the Fallout franchise and isn’t known for being ruthless in hunting down IP infringement. They have tended to ignore the multiplayer mods for The Elder Scrolls games, so perhaps there’s hope. You can take a look at the trailer for the game just below.

Considering this is the company that gives away their older games 100% free I could even see Bethesda giving this little project a blessing.

They’re pretty obviously using original assets, and it seems like their client works standalone? (I.e., not as a “launcher” that requires a working copy of the original games.) A bit sketch. Good luck dodging the lawyers.

You had me right until the dreaded three letters of p v & p. Good luck though let us hope the lawyers stay blind & deaf :-)

As what, opposed to killing it with barely-existent and limited PvE that would, inevitably, turn into a barren gear grind?

Oh yeah because all those other PvE based Fallout games never sold and no one ever plays them or supported them or continues to support them right to this day. Damn stupid limited PvE *shakey fist*

/sarcasm

I’m pretty sure this isn’t a scripted 40+ hour single player game. The engine handles assets from Fallout (and a few other games) but does not re-create content. There are some PvE dungeons, but as far as I can tell no real focus on questing or larger PvE.

My comment is based on the fact that this is a passion, fan-project that cannot keep up with the content schedule and demand necessary for PvE. PvP-focused gameplay isn’t as much a choice as a necessity born on the limitations presented. Creating a PvE-focused game would mean many times the already-large amount of work needed (the engine has been in development since 2006 or so). Basically, seriously thinking it even could be a PvE game is where the issue germinates. That isn’t something that can be honestly held against it.

I would direct you towards a game by the name of Project Gorgon as an example of what a small team can achieve pve wise if they set their minds to it :-)

Apples and oranges. Not anywhere close to a worthwhile comparison.

You can compare it to, say, NWN player-created and run persistent shards… if that included a ten year and going dev cycle designing the entire engine. I’m not even certain, from what I can see, that it even has the ability to possess anywhere close to a decent PvE system.
