ECO explores climate change with the power of video games

If you’re averse to politics, science, and education, you might want to give ECO wide berth. Otherwise, Strange Loop Games CEO John Krajewski hopes that you and the upcoming generation of students might learn a thing or two about the impact of humans on a closed environment through ECO’s 30-day cycle.

“Within the experiential power of games, I believe we can find some of the power to untie the political knots that wrap up climate change, creating an experience in a virtual world where climate change is a problem you can see in front of your face, and it immediately threatens you,” Krajewski wrote.

Krajewski said that by allowing players to experience first-hand how the environment reacts to siphoning off resources and changing the world itself, the players might come to a conclusion through their experience. “Within ECO, the processes of climate change and societal impact happen over the course of 30 days, with a few dozen friends or classmates, in a world small enough to see all of it,” he said.

Stuff like this undercuts the whole argument though.

If you honestly, truly, really believe that climate change is real and it going to doom us all, why are you wasting energy and resources on video games? (Or having multiple homes, private jets/ yachts)

Until people who preach climate doom actually change their own lifestyles because of it, then they are going to have a very hard time convincing others to do the same.

When your game can’t succeed on it’s own merits.

I do hope this succeeds. These tend to be very accommodating times for people who don’t like things like ‘facts’

If posting an image on mobile wasn’t a pain in the rear this post would have the image of TotalBiscuit LUL’ing.

You’re not going to be able to get that point across in a game, especially if it’s drastically sped up.

Also the only reason it’s difficult to ‘untie’ the ‘knots’ is because it’s something that continues to be used as a tool to further political agendas. If the politics, biases, and hidden motives were removed from the equation then maybe the subject could be debated more seriously. Until then, it will continue to be a political catalyst.

The political knots are there because one vocal faction doesn’t believe it exists. If you show the ramifications in front of them they will claim it is a fantasy.

I don’t know if simplification is the best way to convey the problems that comes with global warming, since simplifications are already used to make a case to deny them!

Like when senators show up with snowballs to make that point!
