Kotaku is reporting that Amazon has “basically canceled” Breakaway, with two sources confirming that the game is over – on “indefinite hiatus,” one said, with the potential to return in another format in the future.
The game was announced by Amazon’s fledgling studio last fall following a drawn-out series of Twitter teases. It was essentially a 4v4 brawler that boasted heavy Twitch integration.
It is not clear whether other in-progress Amazon games — like the MMO sandbox New World or the unnamed game John Smedley’s old Hero’s Song team was picked up to work on — are affected. Kotaku writes that “no layoffs are planned” for Breakaway’s team, in any case.

It might be a smart move, there’s already so many games in this kind of genre.
…if my city (Toronto) is jockeying for their HQ2, maybe city council should present them with a no cost fireworks factory to get them from out under their…err, bubbles. o.O
Are there any major cities in North America that aren’t jockeying for that?
Please try to buy Skysaga and finish it. Without the recipe grind. PLEASE.
And add procedural mobs as in CHKN and Spore.
Boo! I was actually really looking forward to this :( It looked far more inspired by SWTOR’s Huttball (which I loved), rather than another DOTA/LoL clone.
Can’t resist…
That was amazing.
the MOBA market is saturated out the wazoo, and with monolithic titles that are hard to beat – unless you capture lightning in a bottle like PUBG, and that happens once a decade. I don’t blame them.
Smart move. Shift the assets to the MMO.
This game is/was going to end up where the rest of them did, competing in an overcrowded market for peanuts.
To be honest , the game sucked …
I’m going to go with “Good” because it ended another “me too” game while not seeing anyone fired.
Why put out a 4 vs 4 when big battle royal games are all the rage.
They started production long before the Battle Royale thing recently took off, to be fair.
