Black Desert publisher Kakao declares 550M registered users across all its games

Black Desert publisher and South Korean gaming giant Kakao announced this morning that it’s accumulated “over 550 million registered users across its games portfolio and services,” which includes everything from PC and mobile games to augmented and virtual reality games – over 1100 games in all. The press release stresses the company’s ambition to expand its daily players further and notes again that it will serve as the publisher for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds when it launches in South Korea next month.

This past summer, the corporation announced plans to consolidate its gaming services — its “cash cow” — into a single holding company, which it formally launched yesterday.

You’ll recall that during Pearl Abyss’ IPO conference in September, we learned that Black Desert specifically has brought in over $300M with almost 8M registered players and performs particularly well in the west. The studio also teased plans for four more MMOs.

Four more MMO’s? Like real MMO’s, not MOBA or such?
MMORPG even? Not a Fifa Online or MMOFPS thingie?

Hey, if they can take what they have learned and apply it in different ways to a variety of MMOs with different goals… it could be really good news. BDO has some decent stuff in it, for all that I rag on a few of the decisions and the term ‘sandbox’ being used for it.

Lmao 550 million registered users!! That’s unpossible!!!

Yeah I’m a registered user, but I didn’t play BDO past the first day. Registered users seems like a puff statistic.

It’s across all games.

BDO is only like 8m or so.

1.5 years on and I’m still enjoying BDO a ton. The ability to kind of AFK progress has kept me interested and progressing my gear so when I actively play it’s just better and better. I think Morrolan said it best last night that there always feels like there’s 15 hours of things to do in the few hours I’ll actually get to play.

That’s not to say everything is or has been sunshine and roses but man it’s just one hell of a game.

300M seems a really low amount of money gained for 8M users in a B2P game. I mean, if the box price is 20, that’s already at the very least 160M accounted for. Unless “registered users” does not mean that people actually purchased the game and it’s merely accounts created through the website… but then the figure is meaningless.

It probably includes anyone who simply registered and tested the game during any free trial promo and never returned. It also seems that BDO is now permanently available on Steam for 10 euros or something like that…

That’s my guess as well. It doesn’t have the playerbase it did a year ago. Once people got over 56, most realized all there was to do was grind and pvp. Most of the RPers left due to insane amounts of griefing that Kakao refused to do anything about, but they did manage to cause more griefers to jump on the bandwagon. I’ve never seen a game where they actually encouraged griefing. That’s why I finally left. Otherwise, I did enjoy the game, especially how you could progress without playing.

Haha the GMs even played around a bit with the new Valencia 6 PvP channel and created an unkillable Sorc named “DeathToPvPers” to mimic the folk hero Dremlock’s “Death to RPers” and they ran around killing PvPers everywhere while invulnerable. Everyone had a good time :)

How I would have loved to see that! Thanks for sharing. :)

I’m actually impressed with that streamer; he’s not mad about it, just almost giddy with incredulity. I would have been angrily disclaiming the legitimacy of that bovine excrement.

The box price is usually anywhere from $5 on sale to $10 without. They’re probably also counting any Trial Accounts people setup to inflate the numbers. That’s on top of the fact that other regions are not B2P like NA/EU. But BDO does a lot of shady things like that to inflate numbers :)
