WRUP: It’s time to figure out if we’re wanted by the police and why edition

All right, everyone, settle down, you’re probably wondering why I called this meeting. Let me get right down to it: Last weekend was a lot of fun, but since then, there are some disturbing indications that we may all be wanted by the police for a variety of crimes. I don’t want to point fingers, but I think it’s time to figure out if we’re wanted by the police, and if so, why.

Like, seriously, I woke up with a lot of blood on my sheets. But that could actually mean lots of things. And I didn’t write myself a note about what I did, but Liam remembered to. It’s just that Liam’s note reads “make seven bob right proper quick in Londonderrydo” and Liam is, I must remind you, from Wisconsin. He doesn’t even know how much money seven bob is. I don’t know how much money that is. Is it even money?

Oh, those are sirens outside. Look, we’ve got to sort this out quickly before the police arrive, if for no other reason than it would be helpful to know whether we should confess, pay a fine, or book it. Let us know what you’re doing this weekend down in What Are You Playing, maybe we can work backwards from that.

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Recovering from a Chevy Chase-esque family function. I’m hoping for some Pokemon Go time and maybe Final Fantasy XIV, but I’m not sure if it’ll happen

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Guild Wars 2 for sure; we’re trioing in Path of Fire and having absurd fun. Maybe something else will grab me too. I keep thinking about ARK: Survival Evolved for some reason.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Nothing too ornate, even though I’ve got a rather wide-open weekend schedule; mostly I’ll be focusing on FFXIV and World of Warcraft per usual, as well as likely getting to a proper start in Project Gorgon.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): I want to get through an interesting “walking simulator” called Tacoma, since I actually play the Steam games that I buy when they’re on sale. Some Dungeons & Dragons Online would be good, and I’m going to keep up with my money generation efforts in World of Warcraft. It’d be pretty awesome if I could buy the expansion by just playing the game!

Pierre, patron: Hello MOP readers, I’m Pierre and I’m an addict: I’m playing World of Tanks again. I tried to resist its call but wasn’t strong enough. Even worse, I’m diluting it with some PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds this weekend. Hard drugs… sigh! I’m definitely a PvPer these days. Enjoy your weekend MOP readers and beware if you plan on riding your tank to the park this weekend; kind advice, better find another occupation, because I’m merciless. Cheers!

Star Traders: Frontiers

It’s easy to overlook and I’m not a fan of this sort of game in general, but I can’t give this one higher marks for depth and innovation in an RPG. Lots of classes/jobs. Deeply integrated faction mechanics with procedural-generated interaction between factions makes every story custom-tailored. Stats and abilities are highly impactful and difficult to meta, which is a tough balance to achieve.

So this weekend I’ll be helping Captain Mustache Fabulous and the crew of the Impenetrable as they scour alien planets searching for sexy lifeforms.

Hmm. I’m going to have to check in on this game.

I wish I had the proper terminology to peg this game, but this one is outside of my normal preferences. There’s a depth of craft here that I would never expect given the surface appearance and the mobile-friendly design.

This is that remake of the old EA classic Starflight games I always wanted, but with much more than I could have imagined. It’s Darkest Dungeon but instead of a static ladder of dungeons you have a dynamic world that changes around you. It’s space combat, boarding, tabletop RPG, Space Trading, piracy, exploration, spying… they’ve built a procedural-generated RPG game that has entirely open agency and deep, impactful systems.

Sorry for the gush, but I really admire the work these Trese brothers have done.

Hmm look interesting but its early access so I will add it to my ever growing list of games I may play when they launch :-)

No problems with gush here. Always looking for good games.

Thanks, Steve — I was sort of looking for a game like this to play, so I took a flyer on it, based on your description.

It already looks like there’s more to it than I expected. Thanks for the tip!

FFXIV, watching Overwatch League, and more FFXIV. Possibly other things too but FFXIV is consuming most of my time lately.

Dishonored 2 and loving it. Also reinstalled E:D, but I haven’t made it past the tutorial again. I can’t seem to configure the throttle on my flightstick correctly. I’m also going to check out the latest graphical updates in Die Young 0.5 and give that a quick spin.

I tried watching some of the Overwatch league. It really isn’t watchable and the fact that they are using major cities as the team backdrops doesn’t change the fact they are just a bunch of asian kids who have no relation to the cities in question at all.

tl;dr OW league is really dumb and a waste of time.

I’m playing wow, trying to get my health back on track and reading a lot of how-tos to better myself for the year.

Yeah I stayed up till midnight to watch the first day of matches as that is when they show in my part of the world. Really I should have just gone to bed and got a good nights sleep.

I enjoy playing Overwatch a lot and usually play at least a couple of matches a night but often more.

However from a spectator point of view I think its about the worst thing I have tried to watch. There is too much going on and its not easy to see where / when things are happening from a spectator view point. Coupled with the usual shout casting presentation style that seems to go hand in hand with these type of events yeah no thanks not for me.

Yeah the fast paced nature of the game makes the shout casting too frantic. Coupled with the fact that pretty much both teams are using complete mirror characters and it’s the same wait until you have 5 people rush in tactics in ranked when you play. It just doesn’t watch well at all. Frankly I thought it was a good idea until I watched it now it seems like a really awful idea – and I enjoy esports.

If it was five scrappy kids from Philly, or London, or wherever it might be compelling but it’s 5 korean kids who were poor enough in their home countries where their parents let them live in a squalor house in some strange city half a world away…it’s just all so very weird to me. It’s not organic at all.

If I put it together I’d have some starter cities, have a ladder tournament to determine who the top 5 were and have actual kids from the actual cities living, working and playing there. THAT would have been compelling even if they weren’t at the very top of the gaming food chain. As it is it just isn’t.

Yikes, I don’t even want to get near that. I get nauseous just from first-person gameplay videos on YT.

i saw the cringey 2004 era dew’dbro advertising and that was enough for me. It looked like they thought gremlin D.Va was a postive and are going full “get ur gamergrub, what are you a noob?” regression.

Wild Buster, Elvenar, Fortnite.
I’ve neglected gaming to binge watch the Punisher Netflix series.
Also looking to try an MMO that is either new(ish) or that I haven’t played in a while, but I’m not sure what yet.

Liked the Punisher Netflix series well enough, but it kinda irritated me that the show had so many side plots and sub-plots that it basically made the Punisher a guest star in his own series.

I think Jon Berenthal does an excellent job with the character of the Punisher. Next time out, I’d like the story to be more directly about him, and less about various supporting characters.

My opinions only, of course. Glad you had fun!

Cheers,

My only crimes this week were probably fashion crimes.

Not a lot of gaming here this week — caught a “lite” version of the flu that’s going around, and its debuff has stacked with the health stuff I was already pushing through.

I’ll be okay — it’s just annoying and inconvenient.

One WRUP thing I can offer — I started following one of the scripted plots on offer in No Man’s Sky (the Artemis one) and, well kids, shite gets weird.

I’m enjoying myself, but I never expected that NMS would get so trippy with its plotlines. I’m still not sure where it’s all going, but I’m curious to find out.

Treat yourself and others well, please. Treat each other better than people have been treating each other in the comments sections this week (depressing). Here’s to better days!

I’m not entirely sure what I’ll be playing this weekend, probably a little more Fallout 4 and Fortnite. Maybe a few more side missions in The Division. Skyrim perhaps? Lots of good options, just nothing standing out right now.

I finally hit 60 on my Dank Knight in BDO so I’ll be exploring a bit with her as I don’t want to level up any more on her just yet. I also got my Zerker to 56 and I can’t believe how fast leveling is now in BDO from at least 1-56. It’s so much faster than it used to be I think I may level up a Valk and Witch just for kicks.

I’m doing a Dark Souls 3 playthrough for the first time and getting ready for Season 3 of Street Fighter V Arcade Edition coming out on the 16th as well.

I’m still working on my Guild Wars 2 quest for the Predator, just need a few more hours in WvW and a mass evacuation of my bank tabs and I’m ready to roll. Aside from that, I’m working my way through mount and mastery point collecting, and maybe a few hero points to see what Mirage and Scourge are like.

Its odd. I used to spend most of my time roleplaying, now I’m spending most of it doing PvE and WvW. I feel like I’m kinda going backwards in priorities?
