Em-8ER lands Firefall’s composer, works on demo

So what has Mark Kern’s Em-8ER been up to these past couple of months? The team shared the latest news about the giant mech fighting game in a maiden video update, starting with the word that Kern had signed on former Firefall composer Michael Bross to create the score for this game as well. We even got a quick listen of what it sounds like.

The team is hard at work on a “vertical slice” (read “demo”) that involves a Thumper encounter in which a mining mech has to fight off waves of enemies on a planetary surface. A lot of attention is being given to the movement — the running, jet packs, and gliding — of the omniframe. Both human male and females are being created to sit inside the mech, although players won’t be able to jump out of the vehicle to run around (at least for the time being).

Woohoo! Because Firefall’s music was… noteworthy? I think I turned it off after a couple of hours.

I still think this game’s name is going to be a stopping block for people…

Why does Mark Kern….have fangs??

He probably just fed on the corpse of Firefall before doing this video.

Just what the MMO world needs to drum up some something to argue about: something related to Mark Kern!

Well I hope its good. I will always be hopeful that we will get a good MMO shooter.
Although I’m not crazy about being in 2018 and still be basically waiting on Firefall to come out.

Is Em8er the final name they are going for?

Yep. :(

Em8er continues to do a terrible job of not looking like it isnt kern absolutely convinced firefall couldnt fail, it could only be failed.

Kern.

The problem with Firefall wasn’t the game looks or how it was developed. That in itself was fine/fixable through the years.

The problem was management. YOU. As long as you’re involved in anything related to management, you’re going to fuck up.

So, whatever “taste” you want to give me, i reserve my right to tell you to f*ck off.

Kern was ousted. The team there implemented all of these radical changes. Like removing he instances BGs. Implanting levels. Cutting the zones into level based. They bastardized the game. All after he was looooong gone.

I played since one of the very first alphas they ever had. Kern’s version of the game was VASTLY superior to the junk that was made long after he was gone. Period.

Utakata

Outside the anecdotal, that’s not how we’ve been hearing it.

Reader
BDJ

Hearing. Key word. It’s he said / she said.

Yea. Kern was an ass. He built that god awful bus.

It’s indisputable though that that particular version of the game was a lot more fun than the shit show we got after he left. 5 different versions of the game. Level based progression. Raid bosses. Zones like wow that were level gated. None of that was Kern’s doing.

It was billed as a sandbox and turned into WoW with jet packs. I’d take Kerns version over the hammered dog shit that phobius and Fadedpez gave us any day of the week.

Sure, you thought the game was great under Kern’s tenure, but you have let your guard down by stating that. Because what you think is great for you, isn’t everyone else’s cup of tea. As I am also sure what was left Firefall wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea either….or the game would still be around.

It’s too bad that Kern poisoned the well enough that there will never likely be a consensus of which was better, Firefall or Firefall NGE. Meanwhile and because of that, I wouldn’t touch this current project with a 8 M-ter poll. Just saying.

Reader
BDJ

It’s almost a universal consensus. You would know that if you had played the game. Somehow I doubt you did.

They wouldn’t have had to have 5-6 iterations and reboots if it was liked.

But hey. You are a WoW diehard. Of course you would think making the game into another boring run-of-the-mill theme park would be ideal.

Reader
Bullet Teeth

I have to agree with BDJ here. As much of a complete PR shitshow the whole Bus stunt & the E-Sports attempt were, the game was INFINITELY better than any iterations after Kern was tossed. Let’s just say he’s not exactly the colossal fuck-up that Jeff Hickman is.

I played the CB, and I’d take that many times over whatever the fuck you’d call that launch product…

Reader
Bruno Brito

I also played the CB, and the game had…Thumpers and thumpers, and thumpers. The idea of being a sandbox was good, but the game had NOTHING else. KERN was the one who booted PvP, for a “revamp” that never came. Then HE changed the directions of the game again, and again. When he left, Red5 had to pick up the scabs.

It’s amusing how both of you, BDJ and you now, think that being a sandbox means that your game has pretty much -N O T H I N G- IN IT.

Kern was a mess of a CEO and fucked an entire company. He screwed the career of a shitload of people. My issue isn’t with his games. It’s with him.

And NO. Firefall wasn’t better than It was a launch. it was ALWAYS a lacking game. It ALWAYS lacked direction. It ALWAYS was weak and had little going for it, except jetpacks and cool mechanics. The game didn’t had a focus because of Kern, and HAD to become WoW with Jetpacks, BECAUSE HE FUCKED UP.

But hey. You are a WoW diehard. Of course you would think making the game into another boring run-of-the-mill theme park would be ideal.

Yet, i love sandboxes, and Firefall wasn’t one.

Simply claiming without evidence because you alone liked what the game was in beginning is simply anecdotal. Claiming instead I would not understand because I never played the game only reinforces the anecdotal. Claiming I like WoW, and I would never understand is moving it to the ad hominem. Neither position is valid in end, nor does it dispute Kern was a big factor is driving this game into the ground. It’s impassioned apologetics at best. Sorry.

4 of those 5 iterations was under Kern though, the only one that wasn’t was the launch version.

When someone says “the game was better in beta”, you need to immediately ask “which version of beta?” pre0.5, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, or 0.8? Each version came with a HUGE rework to the game, many with a progression reset of some kind as well.

Bruno Brito

Don’t forget the PvP removal, HIS idea.

Reader

I mean. you are aware most of the gaming world is emphatically familiar with kern’s antics before he left, right?

Reader
BDJ

His antics don’t bother me. He could be Derek Smart for all I care. From a strictly gameplay perspective , his game was better than the versionssssssssssssss that came after him.

Reader
Bruno Brito

He engaged the downward spiral that made Red5 the failure it is today.

He’s the contributor and main reason for many people losing their careeres, because he couldn’t keep his e-peen in check, and keep money where it should be.

Whatever the gameplay the game had, it is NOT a substitute to a good manager, and that, Kern is not. He may develop stuff good, he’s not a good CEO, and he shouldn’t ever be one again.

Which version of his game? I mean, say what you will about the post-launch progression systems, but at least they were consistent. I played from 0.5 until after launch and can count 5 MASSIVE reworks of how players advanced, 4 of which came under Kern’s leadership.

Reader
Illumina Blade

HIS game was overhauled over and over and over long before he was ousted. Do you know why he got the boot? He kept taking Chinese loans for a game that wasn’t able to pay for itself.

There were multiple versions of Firefall that were good and just needed to be completed but Kern kept knocking it down and starting over.

Mewmew

Which versionsssssssssssssssssssss of his game did you like the best? He had many.

How could his antics not bother you if you read what he did in the office? That’s pure destruction to a game, to a company and it’s employees.

He could be Derek Smart for all you care? I hope that’s an exaggeration.
If not I’m done even remotely listening to your opinion.

His version? As far as I’ve read, he had many versions. He kept changing the game and what he wanted it to be. The game got a working and decent version out *despite* Kern, not because of him.

I’m not saying I won’t give Em8er a chance, because I will. But the crapstorm of a mess Kern made of the company and employees working on Firefall, coming into the office like a schizophrenic madman screaming about massive changes and complete overhauls of what he told them to make the last time.

And he wasn’t happy with whatever version you’re imagining in your head that you think was his “final” – he kept wanting to do more overhauls and changes of the entire thing. That they were able to release anything with the tornadic mess of a person Kern was is a testament to the rest of the team, not him.

There are multiple employee accounts of what he did to the company and game. You’d just have to really close your eyes to the truth to pretend he was anything other than a chaotic force that wrecked the title.

Hopefully he’s learned something about what not to do by that failure. We shall see this time around.

Like I said I’m still willing to give the new game a chance and see how it goes, but let’s not try and BS the truth of what happened with Firefall and why.
