And so we did. The box in question was a Star Trek Mission Crate from one of those services where you sign up, pay a monthly fee, and receive a box full of themed swag every 30 days. Massively OP was sent one for promotional consideration because Cryptic had just signed a deal to team up with Loot Crate and include Star Trek Online codes.
It was pretty neat, all things considered. I’ve never opened a loot crate before, but I do love convention swag, and this box ended up being a low-stress version of collecting goodies from cons.
One well-thought out detail for this crate series is that you can choose your favorite Starfleet division (command, engineering, science, or medical) and receive loot tailored to that. I chose science and received a com badge for that division (which was promptly confiscated by my assistant when I was not looking).
So what came inside? Apart from the shuttlecraft box and com badge, there was a Borg t-shirt (which was quite comfy), a detailed Locutus of Borg statue, a small model of the Enterprise-D, and a “Resistance is futile” sticker. Cryptic also included a code for a Star Trek Online starter pack, which promised a T1 Connie, emotes, and other small goodies. Unfortunately, when I went to test the code, the site did not accept it for my account.
The cost of the crates is $36 to $40, depending whether you sub for multiple months or not, and while the company promises that you end up with over $65 in value in each crate, I was on the fence about the offerings. I suppose it would really matter if you liked and would use everything in the box or just one or two things. Another consideration is that every month the theme changes, so if you’re only into one of the series, you may not see that series come around for a while.
