The devs over at Crate Entertainment are back with another installment of Grim Misadventures, and this time they’re focusing on the upcoming Oathkeeper mastery, which will be added in Grim Dawn’s next expansion, Forgotten Gods. In the previous Grim Misadventures, players got one of their first looks at the Oathkeeper by way of a slew of new art and in-game screenshots, but today’s post is all about the crunchy bits — mechanics, abilities, and talents. The Oathkeeper is a paladin-esque mastery that combines divine magic with a heavily shield-centric moveset to create a monster-slaying force to be reckoned with.

Players may have already seen one of the mastery’s iconic abilities, the Aegis of Menhir, which allows the Oathkeeper to throw his shield Captain-America style, sending it bouncing between nearby enemies before returning to him. But that’s just one of the many ways in which the Oathkeeper puts his shield to deadly offensive purpose: He can also use Shattering Smash to slam his shield into the ground, sending out a shockwave of holy energy that damages all enemies in its path. The Oathkeeper also has a slew of other, non-shield-based abilities at his disposal, including a huge AoE whirlwind attack, a powerful persistent self-buff, and a new auto-attack replacer that grows stronger with each successful strike. You can check out the full Oathkeeper ability preview over on the game’s forums, or scroll down below to watch the most recent official livestream in which you can see the new mastery in action.
