Fallout 76 fans are livid over what they call a collectors edition ‘bait-and-switch’

Answer a question, Todd.

Bethsoft just can’t catch a break with Fallout 76, can it. Players across social media are bemoaning an apparent switcharoo in the Fallout 76 collector’s edition. The original collector’s edition advertisement, both the photo and text, described a “West tek canvas carrying bag” that looks pretty swanky. However, what actually arrived in these kits was a cheap-looking nylon bag that doesn’t match the description or the image whatsoever.

Naturally, players who shelled out $200 for this product were a bit miffed and contacted Bethsoft. And now, according to multiple users on Reddit, customer service reps for Bethsoft have given answers on the topic that differ in tone but not in result: Bethsoft decided to switch the product without warning. Here’s one:

“Due to unavailability of materials, we had to switch to a nylon case in the Fallout 76: Power Armor Edition. We hope this doesn’t prevent anyone from enjoying what we feel is one of our best collector’s editions.”

And here’s another – ouch, right?

“We are sorry that you aren’t happy with the bag. The bag shown in the media was a prototype and was too expensive to make. We aren’t planning on doing anything about it.”

Twitter user @AllGamesDelta posted photos of what was advertised vs. what was actually delivered:

It’s not clear whether anyone has any grounds for legal action – I mean, we’re talking about a bag here – but Redditors in the thread with nearly 24,000 upvotes are discussing the efficacy of credit card chargebacks at the least.

Update
Bethsoft has now issued a formal statement explaining why the second response above was so, uh, curt:

“The Bethesda Store’s Support member is a temporary contract employee and not directly employed by Bethesda or Bethesda Game Studios. We apologize to the customer who took the time to reach out. The support response was incorrect and not in accordance with our conduct policy. Unfortunately, due to unavailability of materials, we had to switch to a nylon carrying case in the Fallout 76: Power Armor Edition. We hope this doesn’t prevent anyone from enjoying what we feel is one of our best collector’s editions.”

The message on Reddit also has an edit that says it will compensate buyers with the equivalent of $5 in cash shop currency: “We are working with our CS team to provide 500 Atoms to Power Armor Edition purchasers.” Incidentally, the first Redditor to report all this has also pointed out that Skyrim had a similar issue back in 2011.

Update Dec 3
Bethsoft has now promised to send everyone who requests one the bag that was promised. More here.

The compensatory $5 atoms offering, which is secretly intended to get people to waive their legal rights to a refund or replacement is UNBELIEVABLY shady.

I see Bethesda has their special response media teams out spreading the true love of the game.

I have a low opinion of gaming “collector’s editions” and little sympathy for those who purchase them.

Won’t disagree it’s a bait and switch, but I’m sure Bethesda executives are a bit surprised people actually care whether they got canvas or nylon, I confess I’m struggling to understand it.

Bag and switch.

I am FUCKING pissed about this. My CE has been setting in the box since I don’t plan to play the game right now and was planning to put the items in my new home next month. I didn’t even know they ripped me off. If this isn’t resolved this pos is going back to Amazon and if I had the time and inclination I’d sue.

I like the game, to be honest, but this? This is absolutely ridiculous. That response is going to come back to haunt them in a big way.

Just a minor thought – can you tell the difference in the bag if you’re wearing the power armour helmet?

Haha. Thank you thirty… i laughed out loud :)

In other Bethesda News I just got the “Murkmire” DLC in ESO for Free just for logging in each day this month (which I would have done anyway), So Bethesda ain’t all bad :)

Just a slight correction, but ESO is handled and developed by Zenimax Online Studios, not Bethesda. They’re both under the same parent company of Zenimax Media, though.

Uh, ESO is zenimax online entertainment. Not Bethesda. Just because Zenimax ownes bethesda doesnt mean they are bethesda

bethesda was originally the parent company. zenimax the parent company is just a holding company. the actual publishing arm and brand is also still bethesda.

Giving away content that has already seen it’s best sales costs them literally nothing.

Well, probably at least half of any given game’s sales happen launch week. However, there are always those new recruits who join in later, as well as those who were out of game due to This Thing We Call Life and return in the future, etc. that will buy an expansion after the fact. Not to mention that some people have limited finances and have to wait for Christmastime or tax time or whatever.

It was still a nice thing for Zenimax to do. I haven’t had much gaming time lately, but I did manage to get Murkmire by logging in briefly every day myself.
