The Daily Grind: Do you have any MMO regrets from 2018?

Strawberry fields forever.

We talk a lot about how we feel about the year that’s past and our resolutions for the next year, but we don’t tend to discuss regrets despite them being jut as relevant. After all, if I had known this was WildStar’s last year, maybe I would have made more of an effort to explore the game, really enjoy the stuff it had on offer one last time. I regret not making better use of the last stretch of time, simply because I didn’t know it was the last stretch of time.

Of course, not all regrets are that far-reaching. They can be as simple as “I wish I’d figured out what to play in EVE Online faster” or “I wish I had spent less time playing Champions Online when it’s on life support.” So today, let’s talk about this. Do you have any MMO regrets from 2018? Are they elements that will inform what you do in the coming year, or is it more a matter of just things you wish had turned out differently?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

That moderators on my previous game that I dedicated 4 years of my life (And money) to, would throw away that kind of dedication from a loyal player to support a moderator over a player and silence them into oblivion, rather than allow free speech to actually function.

Censorship has become ‘mainstream’ on the internet and in real life a lot more lately, and it is harming the customer rather than the people who are using it to harm others.

They banned me from posting to their forums for a month because I posted proof that the ‘top of the food chain’ (of moderators) had literally threatened to remove me from the game because I wouldn’t kiss up to some of the people who ‘have a lock’ on certain content in that game, people who literally spent months harassing and harming me/my in-game play time, and any time I reported their behavior nothing was done, but anytime they’d report me, someone would show up nearly instantly to cause me more grief/to help them grief me more.

There was numerous threads about similar cases, and they would magically ‘poof’ whole sections of those out of existence on their forums rather than address the problem. I’ve simply had it with control freaks who are playing games with people’s actual lives on games or on forums.

This world talks about having freedoms, having the ability to play a game free from harm, and the ‘toxicity’ of certain people on the internet has become ‘the new normal’.

I regret that that has become the new normal for my last MMO, and I fear it is becoming the new normal in life also.

Stop playing what ever piece of shit you are playing. In no way is it worth it.

I did. Sadly. It’s a game with an active decay mechanic though, so that means all my stuff that wasn’t directly on my character will go poof from lack of playing. I resigned myself to losing all that stuff, but it really irks me because people will be able to setup under my stuff and loot the remains after certain containers break open. So somebody (possibly one of the nasty people) will ‘profit’ off my demise/leaving.

I quit mid-year because of all that stuff and went back to an old game I hadn’t played for 11 years. I’m back on Runescape currently, but I’m kind of bored over here with nobody to play with and keeping my eyes open for something fun to actually play. Problem is, I was on a open-ended sandbox for so long that I don’t really want to play story driven stuff that holds you to some set ‘path’. And most of the other games nowadays have too much forced PvP for my liking…

Not sure what to play now. Investigating some of the newish titles…

Buying a new gaming computer because of all the games I do not play. Well, those spreadsheets really fly like a mofo now!

Not visiting all the zones in WildStar before its shutdown. However, I’ve finally discovered Guild Wars 2 which is even better for sightseeing.

I regret falling for the new expansion hype and spending money on WoW again, I wish I had spent the money on a better game.

Having a lifetime sub to TSW/SWL and not getting farther than Egypt.

Egypt is the pits, but Transylvania and Tokyo are fantastic. So get back on that horse my friend, because Lilith has plans for you.

Probably my only regret is not completing the Mage Tower challenge for my Paladin tank. I really enjoyed the difficulty and having to learn the fight inside and out, especially while not being overgeared and with limited legendaries, however the grind for crystals to pay for attempts annoyed me beyond belief so i gave up on it.

Spent 4 years playing Final Fantasy XIV then moved countries and wasn’t able to transfer my data to my current region, I spent a lot of money and time playing it. All classes level 70, millions of Gil, a nice mansion, all gone, wasted my time.

Why can’t you continue playing in your old region? Other than some extremely increased latency, i can’t see any other limitation that would make me abandon the game like that.

It wasn’t a great year for MMOGs.

I regret not finishing Legion when it was still current, because it is a shadow of its former self now.

I regret not cancelling my sub before BfA launched, and inadvertently giving the impression that I was even momentarily supportive of the idea that fat pirates are an appropriate follow up to Sargeras.

I regret playing through the 2.1-2.55 MSQ content of FFXIV instead of paying the $18 and sparing myself four weeks of slogging through recycled dungeon content and B-team writing.

I regret not pitching my own MMOG on Kickstarter so I could run off with the free money.

Wish I didn’t waste my money on LOTRO’s VIP subscription for Legendary server… I kind of knew it would be same exact experience as on free servers, but I still wanted to try, and couldn’t last more than few hours – yea, the population was noticeably larger but horrible engine performance and the highly dated visuals all negated the “high population” part for me.
