EVE Down Under kicks off with a hilarious screwup in Sydney

11

EVE Down Under kicked off today (last night, for those of us in the US) in downtown Sydney, Australia, with a series of developer and player talks on everything from the art design process behind EVE Online’s ships to the upcoming Invasion expansion that is due to drop in just a few days on May 28th.

The event has gone off almost without a hitch so far, except for when the event t-shirts arrived and they had “Sidney” on them instead of Sydney. The funniest part is that the t-shirts were printed locally, so you would think that the printers would have noticed the error. In typical EVE style, everyone has just taken it in stride and laughed about it, and they are getting reprinted.

MassivelyOP is on the ground right now at EVE Down Under in Sidney Sydney, so keep an eye out for news and coverage from the event. Assuming the internet holds out here, we’ll also be joining the podcast to talk about some of the insanity that’s about to drop in the Invasion expansion.

Disclosure: In accordance with Massively OP’s ethics policy, we must disclose that CCP paid for our writer’s travel to and accommodation at this event. CCP has neither requested nor been granted any control or influence over our coverage of the event. I hear someone offered CCP $50 for one of the misprinted t-shirts.

EVE takes place in the FAR FAR future. Maybe they don’t spell it with a Y any longer in the 30,000,000 century…yeah, that’s it. ;)

Spelling Sydney as ‘Sidney’ is legitimately what I expect a five-year-old to do and even then all they’d have to do is look at one of those blown-up cartoon maps.

Even then as a weak speller, I’m pretty sure I could spell Melbourne (a better choice of city to run an event like this, we have great coffee and public transport, no bias whatsoever ;3) by six just simply by being used to the word being printed everywhere lol.

So my question is this, was it someone from CCP who wrote this? If so, I’m now half expecting them to then claim Sydney is our capital as well haha. “We’re so glad to be in nation’s capital to run this event”.

PS. Y’all now welcome to pretend that you knew all along Sydney is not our capital.

Instant collector’s item.

Cue all ships in game now being called “Sidney’s Folly”.

More likely they hired a local company to do it and they just outsourced the work to somewhere in SE Asia.

Entirely possible, unless it says “Made in Australia” on the shirt, then I wouldn’t trust it was printed here.
Or even if it was, I suppose it’s also possible that the printing company just prints what’s given to them, not their job if the mistake is not on their end haha.

Somewhere in Nova Scotia, Sidney Crosby is reading this and rolling his eyes.

I want to believe this is actually the scheme of some corporation in-game to influence real world events to cause ripple effects back in the game.

I don’t care if it’s completely bullshit, it’s way more interesting than the more realistic answer of “Someone made a simple, but big, mistake.”

Either way, thanks for the chuckle : )
