Portal Knights is transforming into a full-fledged MMORPG as the original patches on PC and the Switch

Like a blocky caterpillar spinning a chrysalis around it, Portal Knights is preparing to transform itself from a mere co-op sandbox to something far larger — even massively multiplayer, you might say.

According to the Steam announcement this week, an MMORPG version of the popular (and completely adorable) fantasy game is being developed by Duoyi Network and 505 Games in China for the Chinese market specifically. This MMO version won’t replace the current Portal Knights but will run parallel to it as a large-scale big brother to the existing title.

A free-to-play model seems to be the order of the day for the MMO. No platforms or time frame has been announced, nor do we know whether it’ll ever come west, though the game is apparently being demoed at ChinaJoy this week.

Western players in the current not-massively online version of the game are in for a treat of their own today as the questing update goes live for everyone and the latest DLC launches on the Switch.

So what do you think? Is this a good game to transform from multiplayer to massively multiplayer? Have you ever given Portal Knights a shot? Let us know in the comments!

I am a big poo poo’r of blocky games, but this game was a big surprise to me and I really enjoyed my time in it. I surely got my moneys worth out of it.

As long as I can keep my singleplayer offline game, then I hope it’s fun for people that want the MMO mode.

Unless they are redoing the islands to be much larger than they are now I can’t see this as an MMO. I can see it as a multiplayer game which you can do on the western version already. Are the islands going to regen or are they going the trove route? There are a lot of questions that need to be answered before I would call an multiplayer game a massively multiplayer game.

This looks interesting. Reminds me a bit of Spiral Knights.

IronSalamander8 .

It’s a good title and my only complaint is that I can’t get storage for all the stuff I have made fast enough on the starter island. It has some MMO potential but I’ve been playing it solo (albeit slowly as it’s impossible to keep with all these games) with no issue.
