The Minecraft community’s insane project to build the Earth in 1:1 scale

The Minecraft community is well-known for attempting huge feats of architecture and construction, but a new project might just take the cake. Late last month, YouTuber PippenFTS announced that he was going to reconstruct the entire Earth in the game at an ambitious 1:1 scale. Obviously, PippenFTS needed a bit of help with this, and the community has turned out in the tens of thousands to aid in this noble and insane cause.

It’s not just the challenge of taking a globe and figuring out how to handle that on a flat plane (although the Flat Earth Society is available to share its maps), but the fact that this virtual world is going to include a whole lot of famous buildings that are also being reconstructed at a 1:1 scale. Since the terrain is being handled through a translation from Google Maps and other satellite imagery, the real work is in this recreation of human structures.

This project is only possible by using a special Terra 1-1 mod to bypass the normal limitations of Minecraft’s boundaries. If you’re curious about the project or want to chip in, there’s a Discord and subreddit that is serving to coordinate efforts.

Discord moderator Evilpauwse explained why this project has attracted so much interest: “Something of this scale has never been done before and is ready for anyone who wants to take on the challenge of doing it.”
