Knowing enough World of Warcraft to appreciate jokes like the omnipresence of Legion’s illusion detection or that skinning a bear should aggro every bears in a 40 yard radius? Priceless. Being familiar with Final Fantasy XIV so that you understand jokes about the Crystal Exarch getting into his Stress Box or why anyone calls Au Ra lizards? So valuable.
Or at least, valuable for understanding player memes.
Any big enough game is going to have its own memes and in-jokes, often time eventually being referenced within the game itself simply because the developers also see these jokes.
