The Daily Grind: What MMO titles bother you more than they probably should?

There are about nine million more pressing questions about why you're this way, of course.

There’s no good reason to call Guild Wars 2… well, that. The title of the original Guild Wars already didn’t make a whole lot of sense because the actual game wasn’t about the eponymous Guild Wars; those were over and done with. But Guild Wars 2 features no additional guild wars! It actually features less warring of guilds than the original did! Guilds and the wars thereof are totally irrelevant, and the title makes no sense whatsoever.

If it isn’t obvious from the premise, this is a silly thing to care about. The game is Guild Wars 2 because it’s a sequel to Guild Wars, obviously. But there are a lot of MMOs with titles that are either not particularly descriptive or outright misleading. You only explore one galaxy in Star Wars Galaxies, the presence of a number means that Final Fantasy XIV is obviously not final, and don’t even get me started on how many winter events happen in Neverwinter. So what MMO titles that are somehow non-descriptive or inappropriate bother you more than they probably should?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

The title of this article bothers me more that it probably should.

It should be WHICH titles not what titles. A professional writer should understand their tools.

Star Trek Online
I am an old school TOS fan TNG was ok and DS9 is a close second to TOS. Now when the game launched it was and still is the only collector’s edition to any MMO that I bought. I love the game so much under ATARI but they didn’t know what to do with it. This was before cash shops and t6 ships and loot boxes. The game even had a high-quality podcast that was so good and one of the guys went to work on the game.

But when PWE came into me everything went to crap. It’s probably the biggest whales game running now. The lore and timelines are all over the place. Just fact that you have to pay real money for good gear which is ships really bothers me when before you would do long missions to earn ships or gear. Everything is tired to zen and dilithium. The rewards they give out in new story missions are still MK 12 even though we are well past that now. It just burns me to see what PWE does to games.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen is the perfect example of stupid titles. It’s word salad.

How so? If anyone’s going to rise, it’s those who haven’t risen, e.g. the fallen. I’ll admit that it sounds like it was coined by an edgelord, though.

SWG was called such because it represented each server being its own galaxy. So not really correct to say it was trying to represent multiple galaxies. It was multiple takes on the same galaxy.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. I like the subtitle, I just don’t like a promoted title being so lengthy.

Secret World Legends is stupid and I hated everything ‘Legends’ they added.

Most Korean MMORPGs that just pick a name out of the hat without almost any context.

I guess because calling GW2 ‘Bloody hell we can jump’ might have been bad for sales ?

At first I thought this was an article about titles you can get in a game! I would have to go with Guild Wars 2, for the simple fact that it is far and away a much different (and inferior) game than the original that it doesn’t deserve the name.

As a side note, I think the original concept was to refer to the PvP between guilds, which was supposed to be the end game.

World of Warcraft. How many Wars do players actually Craft in that World?

The name made sense for the RTS games, an MMO, not so much.

Pretty sure we craft a new one every expansion for reasons unknown.

That’s not you crafting the war, it’s whatever faction leader the writers pick to go to war in that expansion. The players just go along with it, if they want to play the story of the expansion. You’re just a grunt, not the general.

Oh yeah, one more thing, no more new games with the same tired tropes such as as Legends, Unchained, World, Dark, Light etc…

What? All the good words were taken?
