Conan Exiles’ latest patch for PC runs into server issues, crashes, and lost characters

Nobody wants a patch to an MMO or multiplayer game to arrive covered in bugs and problems, but that’s just what Conan Exiles players are finding with yesterday’s update to PC, which was supposed to bring fixes to Avatars and a rebalancing to followers, but instead introduced server lists not populating, characters being lost, and crashes for Windows 7 users.

As of this writing, Funcom has released an update that should begin to address the server list population issue as well as improve how fast the server list loads, while the devs are still investigating the lost characters problem; a recent update on the associated thread explains that the team may have found the root of the problem. In the meantime, players are being asked to not proceed with the character creation process. As for Windows 7 users running into crash problems, that thread has a workaround for the time being.

Actually it’s not just Windows 7 players who are crashing, but windows 10 as well. People with systems from potato to super high range are experiencing crashes, hangs, freezing etc on systems from Win7, 8 and 10.

Something or several somethings on the back end got majorly nyerked up.

Quality Assurance Testing wants $14 an hour? We don’t need testing..

– Removed Denuvo from the game.

Wait, no one can play the game offline now. It requires an internet connection. That wasn’t mentioned in the patch notes.

– Fixed a number of crashing issues.

That’s really interesting but servers weren’t crashing much. However, people are getting disconnected from thier own servers every 30-60 minutes now.

– Implemented a new Funcom Live Services system. This includes functionality for an in game Friends List and improvements to the Server Browser.

That awesome! I can now invite people directly from inside the server. But the thing is, the server browser no longer functions properly. Can’t favorite servers, there are duplicates of the same server and many servers read a ping of 9999.

– Purge NPCs should now respond correctly to targets placed on an elevation.

Sweet! But Purge NPC’s are still teleporting into player bases and destroying their assets FROM UNDERNEATH THE MAP!

– Reduced HP and damage output of followers across the board. Reduced HP and damage output of bosses to compensate.

I can finally get back into the fight without having the make my followers do it for me. But wait a sec. Now the endgame mods like Age of Calamitous and Extended Endgame Arsenal are way overpowered. Why does it matter? The mod developers cant do any adjustment until Funcom finalizes their HP/DMG tables, which will mean ongoing modifications for the foreseeable future. Oh and they offer more PvE content combined that the base game does and they do it better.

Funcom has decided that they want to take their game back from the community and have locked out the very foundation that supports it. They removed mods that allowed fixes for offline mode and thrall balancing and are not responding to those who are asking why.

The ability to play offline was always enabled by a mod. And just like your complaint about the combat changes rendering other mods OP it’s an inevitable consequence of allowing mods.

There’s no way a developer can account for what all the mods out there do. Every time the game patches some mods will break, and others won’t adjust gracefully. You can’t have a moddable game still in development and not mess up existing mods when you change things. Popular mods get broken all the time by patches – this isn’t new, and it’s inevitable.

Funcom’s QA process has never been airtight, and the failures of something as fundamental as the ability to get a list of servers isn’t a great look. But to claim that they are “taking the game back from the community” because a patch broke some mods? That’s crazy-talk.

“Taking the game back from the community” would be removing mod support. If you play with mods, you have to expect a patch will break them occasionally.

Err… what? Playing the offline single player mode wasn’t a mod. It was a menu option. I’ve been using it since the game came out. I’ve never touched mods.

Personally, I think Funcom take take their “Live Service” launcher and stick it. They removed Deneuvo and managed to replace it with something even less convenient. I do not care about a “unified Funcom experience.” I do not care about their other games. Since they already have my money I get exactly one way to vote – I’m no longer going to contribute to their concurrent player count on Steam. That’s it, the total extent of what I can do.

As of ten minutes ago, this game is uninstalled, and it’ll stay that way until they ditch their stupid, unnecessary, unasked for launcher. IE, it’ll probably never be reinstalled, because nothing I do will make the slightest difference to Funcom. They have less than zero reason to care what I think, about anything.

Thank you!

And that’s exactly what they did. Someone created a mod that bypassed the online checker just after the patch dropped so people could still play offline and Funcom removed the mod from the Steam Workshop. No response when asked why.

Yeah it’s made modded bosses from AoC and EEWA a virtual impossibility now, unless you use OP weapon mods, but personally that just takes the fun out of it for yours truly.

They really should have just buffed players across the board.

I thankfully experienced neither of these issues. However, I did have to verify the game files twice and most servers now show a ping of 99.
