Fallout is getting a TV series run by the Westworld folks and homed on Amazon Prime

So, who nommed the Fallout franchise when last we discussed which MMO or MMO adjacent title deserved its own movie or TV show? Because you were right on the money. Bethsoft announced today that Amazon Studios will be making a Prime Video series based in the post-apoc Fallout setting. If you’re cringing right now, thinking about how the modern Fallout 76 has missed its tonal marks compared to the original games, know that the production studio signed is Kilter Films, the company run by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, now best known for their three years creating and helming the Westworld franchise. Here’s Nolan and Joy talking it up:

“Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.”

If I’m going to be forced to watch (not watch) an intersectional feminist “take” on the apocalypse, I’d prefer Joss Whedon make it. At least he can do jokes. No joy in Joy’s shows. (Scads of dubious-deserved self-importance though. Scads.)

Plus Joss knows how to write an OP feminist fantasy who isn’t a total Mary Sue, who takes an L once in a while.

This is especially important
a. because it’s Fallout. Fallout needs jokes.
&
b. HBO will already have a grim intersectional feminist post-apocalypse on air at that point (The Last of Us: Critical Theory Edition.)

Not likely though. I’m sure A Canticle for Annie Leibowiz is next.

LOL Joss Whedon is pretty much done in hollywood for now (metoo + Justice League debacle)… That ship has sailed.

Wrong Bethesda franchise for a show. I’m just here for Schlag’s dope meme, y’all.

So many vaults to pick from. Each with their own twisted theme.
The lore is amazing.
I hope they focus on the “sole survivor”.

I am all giddy

Westworld Season 1 is Fallout New Vegas quality. Westworld Season 3 is Fallout 76 quality. I hope it is the former because Season 3 was bad, not GoT Season 8 bad but still a confused, dreary mess.

As long as they get the tone right. Fallout should not be a dreary, joyless and miserable experience like the Walking Dead.

There is basically zero chance Lisa Joy will get the tone right. I can’t think of a worse choice, and I know my showrunners.

Fallout is all about tongue-in-cheek plus moments of real Pathos. Lisa Joy only does Very Important Themes and Oh-So-Serious and Deep Meanings of Great Significance to Our Times. That’s pretty much the opposite of Fallout.

Fallout, like most good tales, is very conservative (small-c, not whatever the Orange Man & Team Red are.) Concerned with immutable human archetypes. Wary of Utopias.

It’s right there in the tag line: “War. War never changes.”

Looking forward to this, Westworld is an incredibly thought provoking show.

I was just thinking the other day how cool it would be if Neill Blomkamp did a Fallout movie. I guess I’ll settle for this, fingers crossed. Maybe if it does well my dreams will become reality at some point. :o

This could be pretty good, with the Westworld team behind it. I can definitely see me watching it. I mean if the 100 can get me to watch it’s teen melodrama, I can see myself watching a Fallout story with the Westworld creators giving it more oomph and gravitas.
