There’s nothing like dropping the news on a late Friday afternoon that a direly neglected MMORPG is getting a massive update in the near future to wake you up. We’ve seen so little movement on Secret World Legends over the past two years that one would be forgiven to assume that the game was effectively over, but perhaps not, as Funcom announced that “one of the biggest updates ever” is coming to the game on Tuesday, September 29th.
Now before you get too excited about this, understand that this isn’t a story update; there are no new missions being added with this patch. Rather, Secret World Legends is making some big changes to glyphs, crafting, the loot key system, and instances.
Funcom also announced “significant changes” to all of the game’s nine weapons, with special emphasis on healing and tanking. “Healers have been shifted to a more tactical playstyle to make their abilities and Elites feel more impactful while achieving new balance,” the studio said. “Tanking has received an overhaul and many tank-related abilities and passives have been redesigned or outright replaced to give each tank weapon a unique flavor and focus.”
*cries in age of conan*
I need to get a filter that blocks stories about SWL and Funcom. Its amazing that the mention of that game can still trigger immense feelings of sadness, even two and a half years after the betrayal.
the game needs to do what swtor did ages ago, and what i mean by that is admit that majority of your playerbase only play/sub for the story…. go back to how it was before and release large paid dlcs a few times a year which contained large chunks of story content….
for those who prefer the pvp (i never played it) or other game modes maybe have occasional free updates for those
but where this game shines is its story…. and i myself wont be returning until a substantial bit of story content is added, i dont care if its free or paid… as long as its a decent amount and similar to quality that old sw dlc was in quality, prior to the game going f2p
I agree. I would have absolutely no problem paying for new story content. If the devs put in the work to make it, I think that is totally reasonable as a revenue stream. That makes way more sense as a business model than the current one.
If they ever do make new story content, I would be happy to throw money at it.
When I read the headline, I could only think “Just stop it already Funcom, you let this game die long ago”. I mean, a tune up and making weapons more interesting? Sure, that’s actually more than I was expecting, but it’s just more of the grouping/endgame focus that Funcom has adopted, completely counter to what made TSW so unique.
I really loved TSW/SWL though and would be back in a heartbeat for actual mission/story content.
I was going to joke about the update just being new lootboxes, but apparently reality was one step ahead of me.
To be fair, this “loot key system” has nothing to do with lock boxes, but is about loot from activities like dungeons or scenarios. Everyone will get a big boost here as you no longer need keys (which were granted daily) to get the loot.
However, it is undeniably ironic that a “story driven action RPG” doesn’t get any new story for 2.5 years.
.
Waste of time and effort, in my opinion.
Just think of what The Secret World could have been if they had spent all this time and resources on the original game instead of throwing it in the trash.
I stopped being interested in anything Funcom after that decision.
they wanted to get around the free shop currency cuz more and more people bought the lifetime sub and reduced their cash shop earnings. Thats the only reason they did it, the revamped mechanics couldve been used on the original game if they wanted to gggrrrr.
Lol, you think they spent much time and resources on SWL?
I think they spend neither.
Optimist would say there has to be a reason for them doing this. Considering how keen they are to developed that Dune survival game, they would not waste devs’ valuable time on this if it would not be building up for something more – but a pessimist would point out that companies have pushed new content even on games set to sunset.
I’m ok with balance changes. I would like a complete revamp of the weapon system tho. Maybe something more…cyclical. With a bit more freedom.
A wheel of sorts, if you may.
Well played, sir.
Grinding the same dungeons over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and *DEEP BREATH*…..OVER….wasn’t why I played this game. It wasn’t why anyone I know played either version of the game. I’m happy for those getting enjoyment out of Stasis World Legends and hope this patch prolongs their enjoyment.
